I grab my phone and text him.

ME: WHAT SORT OF THINGS

NOAH: don’t yell its rude

ME: THEN TELL ME

NOAH: it’s PERSONAL

ME: tell me or I’ll throw away all the gummies u left at my place.

NOAH: u wouldn’t dare

ME: wouldn’t I though?

NOAH: underwear

ME: I’m sorry?

NOAH: underwear. I washed my underwear with a red polo and they’re all pink. every pair.

ME: <tears of joy emoji>

 

I laugh out loud so hard I snort, and he looks up from his desk, craning his neck to look through my window at me. I stand and walk across the hall to his office, and flop down in the chair across from his desk.

“So, tiger, how pink are we talkin’, here?” I put a finger up to catch the tears under my eyes from laughing so hard, and hope I don’t have an unintentional smoky-eye look from my mascara.

“Pink. Like…pink.” He replies, shaking his head.

“That’s not like you, Noah. You’re the perfect housekeeper. You’re great at laundry. You did such a great job cleaning up my place that I can’t find anything.” I roll my eyes.

When I mention the cleaning job he did in my apartment, his cheeks turn pink. I can’t say I’ve ever seen that happen before. It’s weird. It’s intriguing.

“Oh, well…,” he rubs a broad palm up and down the back of his neck. “I’ve been kinda distracted lately. It was just a stupid mistake.”

“Well, we definitely don’t want you walking around Vegas in pink shorts. What if our rooms are on the same floor? If you pick up some girl, and bring her back, her laughter will probably wake me up.” I fan myself until my laughter subsides.

“I’m not picking up any girls in Vegas,” he says, putting his hands behind his head as he leans back in his chair.

“Oh? I thought you said you were cooling things off with…what was the last one’s name? Is that back on?” I ask, hoping my curiosity sounds light and friendly, though it is definitely neither.

“No, that’s been over for a while. I’m not picking up women in Vegas, though. I’m thinking of trying something different…,” he looks down, then casts his eyes up at me, the pale blue orbs turning dark as they peek up from under thick, dark brows.

“What?! Don’t tell me you’re batting for the other team now. I mean, I’ve had a few gay guys ask me about you, but I always thought for sure you preferred an innie to an outie,” I laugh.

“Um, no. Definitely one-hundred-percent straight, thanks,” then he looks at me and we say in unison, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.” Seinfeld. Our mutual love of 90s sitcoms is boundless. It is one of a thousand things that make him perfect.

“So, what then?” I ask, dipping my brows.

“I’m taking a little break from the usual, that’s all. I’m thinking maybe I want to try…I dunno. Something…more.” He shrugs and holds my gaze intensely.

“So…,” I swallow hard, the words catching in my throat. Please, dear God, tell me this isn’t the conversation I’ve dreaded for the past five years. Please, please, don’t let him have found someone he’s serious about.

As much as Lilly wanted to see William this weekend, she was fully aware that attending Sunday Mass would not be a good idea. Avoiding contact, or at least extremely limiting it, no matter how juvenile it sounded, seemed like a pretty good defense. She surrendered herself to the mammoth pile of paperwork in her home office and was grateful for once that this tedious part of her job helped to substantially pass the time. As she was concluding her working weekend by revising a list of questions for the interview on Monday morning, Lilly thought about William again and how ridiculous she was being.

Love Is Always Enough: A Character Interview with Neve Hall

 

Meet Neve Hall, the narrator of North to Nara. She’s 17, enjoys nature and animals, has a promising future working at the local museum… and is in love with the one person forbidden to her: Micah Ward, her Nation-assigned Sufferer. Q: What was it about Micah Ward that made you fall for him?

A: Micah is pretty much the exact opposite of my last boyfriend. Kael—my ex—wasn’t a good listener and could be selfish. I wasn’t a priority to him at all, and he really hurt me. I think that’s part of what drew me to Micah. He sees through to the real me, and he makes me feel safe. He loves me with his whole heart. If only all girls could date an empath!

 

Q: What was the scariest part of your adventure in this story?

A: Without giving anything away (of course!), there were so many moments where my heart was beating so fast I still can’t believe it didn’t burst. The obvious answer is toward the end, when Micah and I tried to escape the Nation. Yes, being chased through the mountains was definitely terrifying on the surface—but Micah and I were together, so it wasn’t the worst thing we went through. Instead, the most frightening time for me was when he was attacked during his sentencing. I thought he’d been killed. The idea of a world without him in it was horrifying.

 

Q: On a happier note, what was your favorite date with Micah?

A: We had to be pretty unconventional with our dates, since… you know… we were forbidden by law to see each other. There was a lot of sneaking around. A lot of close calls. That made everything more exciting, too. My favorite date with him, though, was just slow dancing together in his apartment on a rainy night. He played this old song from before the Nation was formed—“The Very Thought of You” by Billie Holiday. I didn’t expect him—this strong, distinguished guy—to do something sweet and vulnerable like that.

 

Q: What’s next for you and Micah?

A: We have a long road ahead of us before we can really have our happily-ever-after. For one thing, we’re on our own now, and we have to figure out how to survive in a completely different place, with no one to fall back on for help and a completely different language to learn. It’s intimidating, and everywhere we turn, the challenges keep racking up. We have each other, though, and I hope that’ll be enough. Love is always enough, I think.

Alexandra slides the balcony door open. The cool night air drifts in and blows the curtains in a ripple. She steps out, grabs the rails, and turns her head skyward. Her green dress and the hair down her back float like the curtains. I follow Alexandra’s footprints in my rug out into the night…and her.

I slide my hands over her shoulders and slowly down her arms. “Would you tell me what you’re thinking? Are you regretting coming up here?”

Her head lowers. “No. Not even a little.”

I know she has more to say, so I let the noise of the city fill the silence between us until she continues. “I had a dream once I never told you about. I had a conversation with Lainey. It was in a place just like this.”

That admission hits my heart in an unexpected way. “You did?”

“Julian, when we were in Savannah, it was not the time to talk about her or ask questions unless you did. I know some of the loss you feel. I watched my dad. I felt things myself. The things that were most important to me then, and still are now, are that you are ready and that you know I would never, and will never, try to take her place. I want you to feel like you can share her with me. Knowing her will only allow me to know you better.

“I’ve thought that for a long time. So, much like I talked to my mother at the Falls, I talked to her in my alone time in Savannah. Being here, now, closes that chapter for me. I knew I would know if it wasn’t right the minute I stepped in here. My anxiety is gone.” She turns her head, so her chin touches her right shoulder. “I can breathe.”

God she’s stunning. Inside and out.

I walk down the hall, and turn the corner into my room to find, to my shock and dismay, a wall of dripping wet muscle standing at the foot of my bed, toweling himself off.

I gasp, clutching my palm to the bare spot on my chest between the cups of my bra—thankfully, a t-shirt model that offers at least a little coverage. Hearing me, he turns, holding the towel just so that the most critical information is unavailable.

“Hey, you’re home!”

Noah takes three long strides toward me and leans forward to hug me. I put my palm out and it lands firmly in the middle of his perfect, muscular chest.

“You’re naked! You can’t hug me naked! It’s weird!” I exclaim.

“You’re naked too!” He argues, wrapping the towel around his waist and folding it into a not-very-secure-looking knot at the side.

I silently will the knot to fail and expose the only bit of Noah Adler that I’ve never seen, but sadly I still have not developed telekinetic powers, so nothing happens.

“There, better?” He asks, palms up.

He doesn’t give me a chance to answer and instead wraps thick, muscular forearms and defined biceps around me as he pulls me into his sculpted torso.

“I missed you!” He says, laying his cheek against the top of my head.

I wrap my arms around his midsection and look up as I give him a squeeze, carefully jutting my ass out so my belly doesn’t make contact with what I imagine is a sizable and delicious member beneath the towel he’s barely wearing.

“I missed you too. You should’ve come with us,” I say, closing my eyes as I do a happy dance on the inside because he came to see me after all.

“I’m not a Bailey. No Bailey family adventures for me,” he laughs. “But I am going to need you to tell me every detail, Ariel.”

I squirm away from him. “Well, that didn’t take long. I’m over missing you now.”
