I toe-heeled my black ballet flats off and gingerly stepped onto the cold airport floor. Tiptoeing, I avoided the spills, the spots, and the grime dotting the linoleum.

Balancing on the balls of my feet, trying not to focus on the germs and the smell of God-knows-what body odor lingering in the air, I bent to pick up my shoes, then took a few quick steps toward the security line.

Of all the things I hated about flying, the TSA line was far from the worst. I shivered as I unwrapped the black pashmina from my shoulders. Normally it would be a pleasure to precisely fold such a luxurious piece of fabric, but I stuffed it into a ball and into the container. My long hair crackled and levitated with static electricity, and I twisted it into a messy bun at my nape.

“I’ll be there around seven a.m.,” the man next to me brayed into his phone. My bin was nearing the conveyor belt, and I tiptoed along, sliding the cubby next to my hip onto the steel rollers.

“Ma’am, your laptop. Get it outta there.”

What about a please? Did the security guard have to address me so brusquely? It had been years since I’d flown. Was this how people acted in airports now?

“Goodness,” I whispered under my breath. I looked at the guy on the phone, then to the conveyor belt helplessly. I needed another plastic tub, but the stack was several feet away. The phone guy—a doughy, road-warrior type in a white oxford and khaki pants— didn’t notice me at all and was of no help. Get off the stupid phone. A tall man behind him paid attention to my plight, wrestled a bin from the stack, and offered it in my direction.

“Thank you.” I reached around the guy on the phone and took the bin.

I heaved a sigh. I didn’t want to travel across the pond. Didn’t want to leave my Palm Beach estate. But when Karl Lagerfeld summons you to London Fashion Week for a lifetime achievement award, you say yes. Even if you’re deathly afraid of flying.

I opened my custom black Birkin bag and reached for my MacBook Air. The laptop went into the empty bin, and I set the bag in a second bin. So many bins.

“You know what I’m going to do to you when I get there?” The doughy guy next to me chuckled lasciviously, and I heard the giggle of a woman through the phone. Why couldn’t people stop yakking in public? God, I hated technology. I tried to use it as little as possible and usually succeeded. That was the benefit of having assistants. And being rich, I supposed.

I inhaled in disapproval.

“I’m going to eat your pussy.”

I gasped and looked up with huge eyes, pressing a hand to my chest. My fingers squeezed the pearls around my neck.

How vulgar. In the TSA line at the Miami International Airport, no less. The man laughed into the phone. “Yeah, baby. Wait for daddy.”

The oral sex-lover didn’t notice my offense, but the tall man behind him did. We locked eyes. His were blue, azure and beautiful. I grimaced in horror, and the blue-eyed man grinned and then chuckled. Somehow, the terrible guy between us didn’t notice the mocking or the disgust.

He deposited her into my arms and resumed pacing. She grabbed at my chunky silver necklace and lunged for my curls. I knew she wanted to play peek-a-boo in my hair because lately that was her favorite entertainment.

I blew a fart noise on Charlotte’s cheek and she laughed more.
Bouncing Charlotte on my hip, we turned again to the window, and she reached her chubby hand to the glass, as if trying to touch the night. I’d dressed her in a frothy, hot pink dress with a tulle skirt. She looked unbearably adorable, and it would be impossible for Caleb not to recognize his own child with big blue eyes so identical to his.
Colin’s phone buzzed. “It’s him.” He inhaled sharply, then answered and grinned. “Hey. Yeah, we’re all here. Okay.” He hung up. “Caleb and Dad and Mom are in the lobby.”
Laura gave a little muffled cry and hugged Sarah, who stared hard at me over Laura’s shoulder.
“I’m fine,” I mouthed to her, not feeling fine at all. I kissed Charlotte’s cheek. “Daddy’s home,” I whispered, trying not to shake too much. Charlotte seemed unusually heavy.
After a few seconds, a nervous, barking laugh escaped my lips. “How long does it take for the elevator to crawl up here?”
No one responded.
Then, the ding of the elevator bell.
The sliding open of the doors.
And my husband walked in.

With a river of sweat between my breasts and a pool of moisture along my hairline, I sat up, gasping and shaking. The white, cotton sheets were heavy and tangled around my legs. It was morning. I was alone in my beautiful Art Deco bedroom and Florida’s sherbet-colored sunrise poured past the half-open curtain. My skin was aflame, as if on the verge of sunburn.
I was eight and a half months pregnant and dreaming of a ménage with my husband—who had been missing for weeks—and his brother. To say I was going insane was an understatement.
I sobbed, hard, my chest heaving. At one point, I almost retched, I was crying with such force. Sitting up, I gulped in a few breaths, trying to calm myself. It was nothing but a crazy, hormone-and-stress-fueled dream. One of many tormenting nightmares I’d had in recent weeks, ever since I’d been put on bed rest due to precariously high blood pressure.

Sliding my fingers to the back of his neck, I pressed my lips on his smooth jawline where my hand had been. “I love you, because you love your family and you’re always thinking of them. You want what’s best for them. For all of us. You’re our rock.”
I nibbled toward his ear, kissing and lightly biting him. Caleb shivered and grunted a little.
“Let’s get you out of this chastity contraption,” he said, stroking the two dozen buttons snaking up my back.
“Good idea.” I rose slowly.
Caleb put his hands on my belly, then looked up. “You’re tired.”
“I am, but not too tired to want to celebrate our first night as a married couple.”
Caleb stood and gently spun me around. He lifted my hair and kissed my neck, then paused to work on the top button. Once he got the rhythm of the first few, he was able to kiss my neck and shoulder and unbutton at the same time. His movements turned slow, and he shifted so he was now kissing the back of my neck, then down my back. He lowered to his knees and slowly stripped the dress off my body, kissing every inch of my spine.
“Turn around.”
Carefully, because I was in a pool of chiffon, I did. Since the dress had held my top firmly in place, I hadn’t worn a bra. And I hadn’t bothered to wear a corset because of my belly. So all I had on was a pair of white lace panties and white thigh-high stockings with lacy bands at the top.
His hands went everywhere, and he sighed. Still fully clothed in his tuxedo shirt and pants, Caleb stared up at me. “I’ve never seen you look so beautiful. Everything about you is round and perfect.”
“No, just round.”
He shook his head. “No. Perfect. I can’t wait to see you get bigger. You’re so sensual like this. Like one of those Baroque paintings at the museum.” His hand skimmed up my stomach to cradle one breast.

“Any plans for the weekend?”

I was on my back, staring out the half-closed slats of the window blinds at the parking lot six floors below. My eyes focused on a red car and—ow. Damn. I whimpered as the doctor tormented my cervix with a swab. She undid the clamp of the speculum, and I muffled a squeak by throwing the crook of my arm across my mouth.

“Dinner party,” I mumbled.

Wincing at the knife-like extraction of the medical device from my core, I whipped my head away from the window and toward Dr. Miller’s face, which was between my legs. Propping myself on my elbows, I allowed my knees to fall against each other as she rolled her chair away from the table.

“Wonderful. Okay, just like last year, I need to ask a few routine questions. Sexually active?”

“Um. Yeah. I still have a boyfriend.” Boyfriend seemed an inadequate word to describe Caleb, who was forty-two. But whatever. It would do for this routine conversation.

“Monogamous?”

As I sat up, the chill of the air conditioner hit my bare back, exposed by the ill-fitting paper gown. “Yes. We’ve been together for two years.”

“What are you doing for birth control?”

“Condoms mostly, because I have a hard time remembering to take pills. I also have a diaphragm.” When I remember. When I plan ahead. When we don’t devour each other spontaneously on the kitchen floor. “We also sometimes use the, um, withdrawal method.”

An image of kissing a naked and hard Caleb the previous evening popped into my mind. Amused we couldn’t have sex for forty-eight hours before my annual exam, he’d pulled me atop his body, grabbed a fistful of my hair, then made a request that had sounded so desperate and demanding it had made my toes curl with desire.

I need you, Emma. You’re going to suck my cock. Now. You’re so fucking good at it.

I bit my lip, trying not to grin salaciously at the memory in the presence of my gynecologist.
