About Object of My Desire:

A romance author, a cover model, a book signing…a crush.

Ordinary women like me know we shouldn’t fall for beautiful men like Travis Zehler, one of the hottest cover models in romance fiction. But sometimes we can’t help ourselves.

When I meet him at a book signing, my attraction to him is instant. I’m infatuated, and I can’t stop thinking about him.

Even though I have doubts he’d ever be interested, I invite Travis to attend a book signing with me. And he says yes.

My fantasy comes true when he takes me to his bed, and the more time we spend together, the more I see that Travis isn’t some object to be desired.

He’s a man with a past. A man who’s been burned. A man who’s learned to keep his guard up.

I want to show him he can trust again, but when our confidence in each other is shaken, I began to wonder if happily ever afters are only for my romance novels.

About R.L. Kenderson:

R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name.

Renae has always loved reading, and in third grade, she wrote her first poem where she learned she might have a knack for this writing thing. Lara remembers sneaking her grandmother’s Harlequin novels when she was probably too young to be reading them, and since then, she knew she wanted to write her own.

When they met in college, they bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. What really spiced up their friendship was when Lara introduced Renae to romance novels. When they discovered their first vampire romance, they knew there would always be a special place in their hearts for paranormal romance. After being unable to find certain storylines and characteristics they wanted to read about in the hundreds of books they consumed, they decided to write their own.

One lives in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and the other in the Kansas City area where they’re a sonographer/stay-at-home mom/wife and pharmacist/mother by day, and together they’re a sexy author by night. They communicate through phone, email, and whole lot of messaging.

You can find them at http://www.rlkenderson.com, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and Goodreads. Join their Facebook Reader Group. Or you can email them at rlkenderson@rlkenderson.com, or sign up for their newsletter here. They always love hearing from their readers.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Travis looked away from his phone as he heard Sydney move on the bed. She rolled toward him and put her head on his shoulder. Her brown hair was messy, and her eyes were puffy from sleep.

He thought she looked adorable.

“Mmm … good morning,” she said, her voice hoarse from sleep.

“Good morning.” He kissed her forehead and slid an arm under her head.

She brushed her hand down his chest and abdomen and back up. “Mmm … it’s been a long time since I woke up to a man in my bed.”

“Are you forgetting last weekend?”

She smiled up at him, her eyes half-closed. “That was the hotel bed. I’m talking about my bed.”

“Ah … got it. And I’m glad I could break your dry spell.”

She looked to his phone, which he was holding up. “What are you doing?”

“Just scrolling through Instagram.”

She continued to rub his torso. “That’s your app of choice, isn’t it?”

“Yeah. I used to be on Facebook, but it got to be too much. My personal page, my professional page, groups …”

“I forget how young you are sometimes.”

He wrinkled his forehead. “I’m not that young.”

She kissed his chest and smiled. “Young enough that you’re in the group of twenty-something-year-olds that make me feel old for using Facebook.”

“I never said you were old.”

She laughed. “I know. You should hear my niece.”

Travis smiled. “I can imagine.” He opened up his messages and scanned through them. At the same time, he noticed that Sydney looked away. He assumed it was to respect his privacy.

The woman was a keeper.

He went through them, saving some to reply to later and replying to a few right away. “Oh my God.” The next one he hadn’t been prepared for. He should have been, but those kinds of messages still surprised him every time.

Of course, Sydney looked up at his exclamation.

His first instinct was to hide the image on his phone, but he was innocent.

“Is that … hold on.” She reached over and put her glasses on. “Holy crap.” She burst out laughing. “Those are some huge boobs.” She grabbed his cell out of his hand and zoomed in and out. “Wow. Those babies are impressive.” She handed him back his phone. “Do you know who sent the pic?”

Travis just stared at Sydney. She’d laughed. She hadn’t gotten mad or upset. She thought it was funny.

He cleared his throat. “Uh, no. It’s some random fan.”

“You, too, huh?”

“What do you mean, you, too?”

She rolled her eyes. “I’ve gotten my fair share of dick pics.”

“You have?” He was surprised.

“Yeah. I guess it’s because I write romance. Apparently, the conclusion is, I write about sex, so I must want pictures of strangers’ dicks. When are men going to learn that women don’t ever want that, and if they do, they’ll ask for it?”

Travis laughed. “Do you keep any of them?”

She looked away from him. “Do you?”

“Don’t judge, but sometimes, I show some of my friends before I delete them.”

“You perv. I can’t believe you,” she said, her voice full of sarcasm.

Travis’s eyes widened. “You do it, too.”

“Duh. Of course.”

“So, do you have any on your phone right now?”

“Uh … no.” She looked up at the ceiling.

“You liar.”

“Okay, I have one because I’ve never seen anything like it.”

He made a come-here motion. “Show me.”

“Okay. But it’s your turn not to judge me.” She grabbed her phone from her nightstand, did a couple of moves on her phone, and passed it over to him.

“Holy shit.” He reached down and cupped his dick.

“Right? It’s a Jacob’s Ladder. Ribbed … for her pleasure.” Sydney laughed at her joke.

He was horrified. “That looks so painful.”

“I suppose it is.”

She took her phone back. “I’ve always thought it would be cool to have sex with a guy with a penis piercing, but this is just too much.”

This caught his attention. “You want to have sex with a guy with a penis piercing?”

“Technically, I said it’d be cool. I want to know if it feels good or if it feels weird.”

Travis took her phone out of her hand and threw it on the bed as he rolled Sydney under him. “How about I show you what feels good right now?”

She grinned up at him and spread her thighs.

Travis pushed into her, groaning at the sensation of her wet, slick heat surrounding him.

He kissed her neck and drove into her over and over. Sydney moaned as she lifted both legs and sank her nails into his back. He thrust into her until he brought them both to completion, whereupon he collapsed on top of her.

He quickly fell to her side, so he didn’t suffocate her and pulled her against him.

“Feel good?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she said, panting on his chest.

“And I did it all without a cock piercing.”

Sydney laughed and kissed his sweaty chest. “What are you doing today?”

“I’m hoping you have a gym nearby I can go to.”

“You can go to mine. Do you go every day?”

“Yep. I might take a day off, but it’s usually only once a week. Or, if I can’t go, I do something else to get exercise in.”

She groaned.

“What? You don’t go every day?”

“Hell no. I do four days a week.” She looked up at him. “Does this mean you’re going to break it off with me?” Her eyes widened, and she shook her head. “There I go again, opening my big mouth. And, this morning, I can’t even blame the wine.” She got up on an elbow. “Feel free to ignore me.”

Travis laughed. He liked that she saw them together. The best part was, he wasn’t scared, nor did he feel the need to push her away.

He pulled her back down. “I’ll forget what you said if you go work out with me.”

She rolled away and jumped up from the bed.

He sucked in a breath at her sexy, naked body.

“I take it back,” she said as she walked toward her bathroom. “You can remember me sticking my foot in my mouth.”

Travis laughed.

Five minutes later, he joined her in the shower.

An hour later, she joined him at the gym.

Two hours later, they met up in the shower again.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The combined noise of two phone alarms with completely different songs woke us up at six fifteen the next morning.

I quickly shut mine off, as did Harper.

“That was a horrible noise,” I commented from my bed.

“Yep, I’m up,” Harper said. “Although I’m wondering now why we stayed up late, watching movies.”

“I’m wondering whose idea it was to schedule a seven a.m. breakfast on a Saturday.”

Harper sat up. “No kidding. It’s my day to sleep in. What the hell, people?”

I pushed my covers off me and sat up as well. “We could always skip it?”

Harper’s eyes widened. “And miss free food?”

“You’re right. I don’t think they have coffee though. We’ll have to go and get one before.”

Harper stood. “I’d better get ready then.”

“Are you showering before you go?” I called out to her.

“No, I’m just going to get dressed and go. I’d rather shower after, so I can look pretty for the book signing.”

“Thank God. I didn’t want to shower either.”

I spent most days sitting in front of my computer or running errands. Most of the time, I didn’t even bother with makeup, doing my hair, or putting my contacts in. My outfit of choice was yoga pants.

So, when it came to book signings, I always liked to look a little more professional. But I really didn’t feel like doing all of that before seven in the morning if I didn’t have to. Besides, I didn’t have time.

I brushed my hair and my teeth and put my hair up in ponytail. I put on clean clothes, and, yes, I decided to go with yoga pants because I wanted to be comfortable.

“We’d better go. I don’t want to be one of the last ones there and have to sit with people we don’t know.”

“What’s wrong with that?” Harper asked.

She could make friends with a wall.

“Nothing, except that I hate imposing on people.” I grabbed my name tag and my key card.

“But you’re an author. People want to meet you.”

“I’m a non-famous author,” I reminded her.

Harper grabbed her things and looped her arm with mine. “Then, let’s go make them want to meet you.”

We went and got large lattes first before we headed to the area where we were supposed to meet for breakfast. There weren’t that many people around, but there also weren’t many tables.

“See, it’s a good thing we came early.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Harper said with a smile.

After the food was rolled out, we filled up our plates and brought them back to our table. I wasn’t a health food nut, but I did try to eat well most of the time to keep myself from gaining too much weight. But I was on vacation, and I was eating as much breakfast as I wanted.

“Oh my God,” Harper said with a moan. “These are the best muffins.”

“Crap. And I didn’t get one.”

She broke off a huge piece. “Here, try some.”

I opened my mouth, intending to take a bite, but she shoved the whole thing in my mouth. Both of us started laughing, and I had to turn my face toward the wall behind me. If I kept looking at Harper, I wouldn’t stop giggling, and I didn’t want the room to stare at my chipmunk cheeks.

A close female voice said, “Do you mind if we take your other two chairs?”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Harper wave her arm at our empty chairs. “Go ahead. Those seats are free.”

“Thank you,” a male voice said.

I finally managed to chew half of the food in my mouth and swallow it. “You bitch,” I told Harper as I turned around.

She laughed again, and I probably would have, too, except I was stopped dead when I saw who was about to take the seat across from me.

It was Travis Zehler, and holy shit, but the few pictures I had seen on online did nothing to prepare me for him in real life.

He was tall with broad shoulders and a trim waist, and when he turned to point to something, talking to the woman beside him, I noticed he had a gorgeous ass, too. I wouldn’t have even needed to look up his picture to know this was him. He carried himself in such a way that there was no other word for it than modelesque.

Now, I remembered how I’d thought he wasn’t the cutest guy I’d ever seen. His hair was shorter than the few pictures I’d seen, and he had a trim beard. When he smiled at us, I knew I wanted to have his babies.

Why did I decide not to look pretty this morning again?

Harper kicked me under the table, and I realized I’d been staring. With my mouth open. With food in it.

Travis shook his head and laughed.

I was going to kill Harper later.

The woman to my right had on a purple name tag like me and was probably about my age. She had shoulder-length auburn hair and pretty brown eyes. “Hi, I’m Angela Devlin.”

I swallowed my food, composed myself, and smiled. “I’m Sydney Hart.” I’d seen her name around on social media, but I hadn’t read any of her books yet.

“I’m Harper, I’m Sydney’s assistant.”

“This is Travis,” Angela said, pointing to him. “He’s my assistant-slash-model.”

“So, when did you two get in?” Harper asked. “We saw your name tag still on the table last night,” she said to Travis.

He smiled, but Angela was the one who said, “We got here about midnight.”

Harper winced. “Ouch. And you both got up so early?”

“I slept almost the whole way here from Minneapolis, so I had plenty of rest. But I did just throw on some clothes this morning,” Angela said.

“Us, too,” I said with a laugh. “That’s where we’re both from.”

Although Travis looked great for someone who had driven for hours and gotten no more than six hours of sleep.

“Are you both from Minneapolis?” I asked. I thought I had read Travis was from somewhere farther away, but maybe I was wrong. I hadn’t given his bio my full attention the night I looked him up.

“I’m from Michigan,” Angela said. “I flew into Minneapolis and drove here with Travis.”

“But you’re from Minnesota?” I asked Travis.

“Yep. Born and raised.” He grinned, and not one, but two dimples appeared. Figures. “I grew up in a small town, moved to the Cities in high school, and stayed.”

I couldn’t believe he was from the same place I lived. Despite just meeting him, he gave off this aura. I didn’t know how to explain it, and it was kind of like finding out a famous actor lived near me.

“That’s so cool that you decided to attend,” Harper said.

“Yeah, Ang convinced me,” he said, and I noticed the nickname he used for her. They must be close.

“How did you do that?” I asked Angela, half-joking, half-serious. “I think he’s the only model to attend this weekend.”

She laughed. “I did a lot of begging and pleading.”

Travis shook his head, but he was smiling.

“Truthfully, he’s just a really nice guy.”

Travis shook his head again, and mouthed, No, I’m not.

Harper and I both laughed.

Angela put her hand up to her mouth, so Travis couldn’t see what she was saying, but then she proceeded to speak loud enough for him to hear. “He’s also a big softy.”

“Shh … don’t tell anyone.” Travis shoved a forkful of food in his mouth and grinned.

I mentally sighed. God, he’s beautiful.

Harper leaned over to me and whispered, “Just a guy, huh?”

Exclusive Excerpt:

The first time I saw Mace Wagner, he was standing on the sidelines next to Coach Fischer at the first football game of the season.

I took a seat behind the team’s bench, several rows up on the bleachers, with my friend Becca.

I had just moved to Texas to teach high school because Becca had gotten me a job alongside her.

Becca and I’d met our freshman year at college in Nebraska. I’d been raised in South Dakota, and she was from Texas. When we graduated, we both went home to where we’d grown up, but we missed each other like crazy.

Back in South Dakota, I didn’t have a boyfriend, most of my high school friends had moved away, and I only found a job as a substitute teacher. And, while I loved my parents, when Becca told me about a job opening at her high school, I jumped at the chance. I was only going to be young once and not tied down with a family. Now was the time in my life to explore different things and a different place.

I had moved into Becca’s rental just shy of a month ago. It was a house, but it was small, and I hoped to move into my own place soon. However, I’d gotten myself temporarily settled, and last week, the teachers had started school. I had met almost all of my new coworkers.

But the guy standing next to Coach Fischer was unfamiliar. He was tall and broad, bigger than Coach Fischer, and I was immediately drawn to him. He had his hands on his hips, and I couldn’t help but notice a line of text tattooed on the outside of each arm. I wanted to know what it said.

I could only see his profile, but he looked to be about my age, twenty-five, and he was very into the game. He cupped his hands around his mouth and shouted something at the players.

He was wearing very worn jeans and a football jersey that said Wagner on the back. But no pads or helmet.

I was just about to ask Becca who he was, but she was in the middle of a conversation with the woman next to her. And that was when I realized that this had to be the assistant coach. I had heard the name Connor Wagner said a few times in the halls at work, and since the football jersey displayed the same last name, it had to be him.

I had heard the other women at work, except for Becca, talk about how good-looking Coach Wagner was, but I was still practically knocked off my seat when he turned around.

He wasn’t good-looking.

He was gorgeous.

A living, breathing Adonis.

The Urban Dictionary one. The perfect man with a flawless body who made women’s hearts race and gave them butterflies in their stomachs. Not the Greek mythology one, although I’m sure Coach Wagner had women fight over him like Persephone and Aphrodite did over Adonis in the stories.

He had thick, dark brown hair that was a little long so that tendrils of it blew across his forehead. His eyes were a vivid blue that I could see, thanks to the blue in the jersey that made them stand out. He was lean in all the right places and big in others.

I quickly looked away but not before I saw the knowing smirk on his face. I’d been staring. He knew it, and I knew it.

I willed my face not to turn red and for me to pay attention to Becca’s conversation and forget Coach Wagner.

We might be grown professionals now, but I’d known guys like him my whole life. He was attractive. I was not. He knew he was attractive, and men that looked like him never went out with girls that looked like me.

I wouldn’t call myself ugly, but on a scale of one to ten, I was a solid six. Maybe a seven on a good day. But that was my face. My body? Well, that was more down in the four range. I had hips for days and no boobs. I couldn’t be what you would call voluptuous because God had accidentally forgotten to pack the top half of my body. Or maybe he’d put it all in the bottom. I was disproportionate, and it sucked.

But the good thing about being twenty-five and not fifteen was that I didn’t care so much anymore. Back then, I’d dreamed of getting myself breast implants while I starved myself and exercised until I passed out. These days, I still worked out but only to stay healthy. I’d come to terms with my huge hips and little pooch of a belly. If I wanted to eat cake, I was going to, damn it. I also knew there was much more to someone than what they looked like.

Yet, every once in a while, on nights like this, I was reminded that a guy like him wouldn’t date a girl like me. And that was okay. Really. I swear.

But, as a woman who was five feet ten inches, I was a sucker for tall men. When only fourteen and a half percent of men were six feet and over and barely four percent were over six-two, it was hard not to be attracted to someone I literally looked up to. I’d dated guys my height and some even a couple of inches shorter, but towering men were my kryptonite.

Let’s face it; I was attracted to the guy.

And, because of this, I took one more glance at his left ring finger. While I’d heard the other teachers talk, no one had ever mentioned if Coach Wagner was single or taken.

His hand was bare, but when I let my gaze travel up his body, his eyes were on mine. There was a little bit of laughter in them as he shook his head. He scanned me once before he raised an eyebrow and turned back to the game.

Caught again, but this time, I did turn red. Because I knew that look. He’d assessed me and found me lacking.

Story of my life.

What was different about this story was that I wasn’t attracted to the high school’s assistant football coach. I wasn’t attracted to a coworker, a fellow teacher.

I was attracted to one of the high school’s football players, one of my students.

Title: Take Me In the Night

Author: R.L. Kenderson

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About TAKE ME IN THE NIGHT:

First, he took my heart.

It started in high school. I was his girlfriend…he was the love of my life.

We had plans for after graduation. We were going to escape—he from his family’s reputation and me from my father’s control.

But all that changed the summer before college. Charged with a crime he hadn’t committed, he was whisked away from life, never to be heard from again.

Then, he takes my body.

Twelve years later, he’s back. He’s bigger, he’s tougher, and he’s harder around the edges. He’s no longer the boy I fell in love with.

But I’m no longer the girl who gave him her heart.

Everything’s changed between us. Anger, resentment, and bitterness have replaced happiness, love, and trust.

Except for when darkness falls. That’s when he comes to me at night, taking what is still his.

Now, he’s going to take my soul.

When the lines between our old love and our new hate begin to blur, I know that, this time, I might not survive if he leaves.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I wish I were able to sneak into Maddox’s room like he was able to sneak into mine. I supposed I needed some military training in order to know how to do that. Instead, I pulled out the old spare key I had from when the Carson brothers had lived there. I had taken care of their dog a couple of times while they were on vacation. I just hoped the key still worked.

It worked but not without some jiggling. Damn these old doors and old locks.

I pushed the door open and was greeted by darkness. It was only about ten at night, but Maddox must have already gone to bed. I was glad that I had used the key instead of knocking. I padded quietly into the room and shut the door.

The moment the latch clicked, a hand went around my mouth, and a hard body slammed me into the wall. I tried to yell out in fright.

“Addison?”

It was Maddox.

“Yes,” I said, but it came out muffled.

He dropped his hand and spun me around. My eyes had adjusted to the light. I could see a gun in one hand, thankfully pointed away from me.

I heard him flick the safety on.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came back early.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, I can see that. But why?”

I put my hands on his chest. Ooh, it’s bare. I dragged my fingers down, down, down. “I wanted to see you,” I told him.

He brushed his lips against mine. “What are you doing?”

“Checking to see if you’re naked.”

He pushed his pelvis into me. “Spoiler alert: I am.”

I gasped as I took his length in my hand. “You’re hard.”

He nuzzled my neck. “Adrenaline. Plus, a hot woman just snuck into my apartment.” He sucked on my skin.

“Wow. You’re so lucky. What are you going to do to her?”

He chuckled again and put his mouth next to my ear. “Fuck her, of course.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

I didn’t know who was more surprised—Addison or me.

I certainly hadn’t expected her to walk through the door. When Foster had told me that he was going to get a lawyer, I had been so surprised that Brook Creek had one that I didn’t even think to ask who the person was.

She turned around. “Please close the door,” she said to Whitlock, her voice firm and full of authority.

It wasn’t the only firm thing in the room.

Whitlock shot me a dirty look before closing the door, and Addison turned back around.

She gestured toward the table. “Can we please sit?”

I shrugged, pulled out the chair closest to me, and sat.

Addison did the same and took out a notebook and pen from her purse. She started writing things down, and I took the opportunity to study her. Her chestnut hair had been down to her ass in high school, but now, it was only a couple of inches past her shoulders. Her breasts strained against the top, and I was pretty sure they’d gotten bigger since I last saw her, which was saying something because she’d had a pretty impressive set of tits back then.

And I couldn’t see it now, but I had noticed her nice, round ass before she sat down. Her black pants were so tight that I was ninety-nine percent positive she was going commando or wearing a thong. No panty lines for Addison.

She looked up at me. “So, can you tell me what’s going on?”

“Foster picked me up from the airport. I was driving my brother’s car when I got pulled over. Next thing I knew, Whitlock was putting handcuffs on me.”

“What for?”

I scowled. “Fuck if I know. That asshole’s always had a hard-on for me.”

She sighed. “What was his reason? What did he tell you?”

I snorted. “That I was speeding.”

“Were you?”

“I was going fifty-eight in a fifty-five.”

“Anything else unusual?”

“Other than the fact that I was driving? No.”

“As I recall, you didn’t always follow traffic laws.”

Her comment had me thinking of all the times we’d driven around in my beat-up Chevy truck and the things we’d done in it besides driving. It seemed Addison was thinking the same thing.

I totally recognized the look on her face.

It was the same one she used to give me before she pulled down my pants and sucked my cock into her mouth.

I’d grown up around adults with loose morals, so it was no shock that I’d lost my virginity at fourteen to my mom’s friend’s daughter. She was sixteen when she came to my house, looking for her mother. Her mom and my mom had left twenty-four hours earlier to go on a bender.

So, Sheila took me to the room I shared with my brother and showed me the things she liked to do in bed. I lasted all of twenty seconds before blowing my load, but thankfully, Sheila gave me a few more rounds that I used to make it up to her.

That was just the beginning. For a while, I had fucked anything that I could.

But Addison had grown up completely different from me. She had been a virgin when she and I started dating. Everything she knew in the bedroom, she’d learned from me. Including how to give the best fucking blow jobs.

I tilted my head to the side. I wondered if she still gave good head.

My eighteen-year-old self demanded I find out. My thirty-year-old self didn’t need the complications of being inside Addison Graham again.

Exclusive Excerpt:

ISABELLE RAND KISSED her boyfriend, Bram, on the cheek and exited his vehicle. As she walked to the front of the school, she took a deep breath. When she reached the doors, she turned around and waved at Bram, knowing he wouldn’t leave until he saw her walk into the building.

She made no move to look and see if he drove away as she walked down the hall to her classroom. But, instead of going to the end of the corridor, she took a right into the school’s office.

“He’s gone,” her coworker, Jessica, said.

Isabelle breathed a sigh of relief, but it didn’t last long. She was only a fourth of the way through her plan.

Two more teachers, Danni and Alice, with their arms full, came from the back office area along with their principal, Noah.

Danni and Alice dropped the huge, mismatched luggage at Isabelle’s feet.

“Here are most of your clothes,” Danni told her.

“And here are the rest of your clothes and toiletries,” Alice said.

Jessica came over from where she’d been watching the window and took Isabelle’s hand, placing a set of car keys in it. “Here’s your new car. It’s nothing great, but it’s bought and paid for.”

“Give me the keys,” Noah said. “I’ll pull the car around.”

Isabelle handed them over.

Noah looked at Jessica.

“It’s a black Kia,” she told him.

Isabelle swallowed hard as she tried not to cry. “I don’t know what I’d do without you guys.”

Jessica hugged Isabelle first. “This is what friends do for each other.”

“Help them go on the run like a criminal in the night?” Isabelle joked as the first tear fell.

Alice embraced Isabelle next. When she pulled away, she squeezed Isabelle’s arms. “No, we’re helping you escape an abusive boyfriend who doesn’t deserve to call you his.”

Isabelle smiled as best she could.

Danni enveloped Isabelle last.

“I’m scared,” Isabelle said in her friend’s ear.

Danni drew away and looked into Isabelle’s eyes. “I know. I would be scared, too. But we’ve been planning this for a month. Minneapolis is less than two hours away. You will make it before he even knows you’re gone.”

“Honey, are you sure you don’t want to go to a shelter? Are you sure your friends in Minneapolis can keep you safe?” Alice, twenty years Isabelle’s senior, asked.

There was no way Isabelle could tell these wonderful humans that she was going to the safest place in the world for her. Not only was Damien her friend, but he was also the alpha of the Minnesota Wolf Pack. And her other friends whom she was seeking solace from were the wolf-shifter sentinels. Once she told Damien about Bram, he would do everything to help her. And Bram wouldn’t dare take on the alpha of their pack. Not if he wanted to live to tell about it.

“I’m absolutely sure. I just need to get there.”

“Okay, honey. We trust your decision.”

“We’d better go. I’m sure Noah has pulled the car to the side door by now.”

Isabelle took one of the handles to wheel the bag outside, and Danni took the other.

Once they walked outside, Noah popped open the trunk and then got out of Isabelle’s new car. The bags were loaded into the trunk, and then Noah hugged Isabelle.

When he stepped away, he held out his hand. “Phone.”

“What?”

With his other hand, he reached into his back pocket. “Your phone.”

“Oh. Yeah. I almost forgot.”

The four of them had discussed the unlikelihood of Bram tracking her phone since he wasn’t on her plan, but they didn’t think it was a risk she should take. Plus, she didn’t want to deal with the numerous phone calls he was bound to make once he realized she was gone.

She opened her purse and took out her phone. With a silent good-bye, she handed it over, and Noah gave her a new prepaid phone.

“I programmed all our numbers into it, just in case you need anything. And please let us know when you make it there safely.”

“I will.” She looked around at her friends. “I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you.”

“I do,” Alice said. “You can repay us by getting yourself to safety and staying there.”

Isabelle smiled. “I will. I promise.”

“You’d better.”

Isabelle walked around to the driver’s side of her new car but stopped before getting in. She’d almost forgotten. “Please be careful. Bram is not a good guy, and he’s not what he seems. He’s very strong and very dangerous.”

She wished she could come out and warn them that Bram was a wolf-shifter, stronger than all of them combined, and capable of turning into a wild animal that could rip them to shreds. But she couldn’t. They were her friends, but she couldn’t give away her species.

“Honey, please don’t concern yourself with us. It’s a teacher in-service today, so no students to worry about, and we’ll just tell everyone else you called in sick. We know nothing.”

Noah waved the phone. “As soon as you leave, I’m going to call my office with your phone. It’ll show up on your statement that you called in. Like Alice said, don’t worry about us.”

Isabelle closed her eyes. “You know that’s never going to happen. But I will try to worry less. As long as you promise to be careful.”

“We promise,” Alice said for all of them.

And, with one last good-bye, Isabelle took off for Minneapolis…and for freedom.
