Excerpt:

When I walk past the music room, I hear something that stills me in my tracks. People push past; I’ve become a rock in the middle of a rushing stream, but I can’t move. Then someone shoves me from behind, not on purpose, but the result is the same. I slam into the lockers past the classroom and bounce. The underclassmen who were wrestling don’t even notice that my brain has stopped firing.

Shane Cavendish plays like it’s his reason for living.

I don’t write that on the Post-it, of course. That would just get him beaten up even harder. Instead I scrawl, You’re awesome on the guitar, because the jocks might think that’s cool and leave him the hell alone. It’s a long shot, as I don’t have any particular cred with their crew, but being a musician is pretty spectacular. I can’t breathe for how good—how remarkably talented—he is. And I suspect that if he found out anyone was paying attention, he’d stop playing.

Backtracking to his locker will make me late for class, but it’s worth it. I stick the note just below the vents, as I always do, but this time it feels weightier, more somehow, like this is a turning point. Shaking off the odd sensation, I dodge into Econ with a mumbled excuse. Sadly, it holds no weight with Mrs. Palmer. Unlike the male teachers, she isn’t impressed with talk of ‘female problems’, so I get my first detention of the year, only the second I’ve ever had.

Since tomorrow is Friday and I have standing plans with Ryan, I ask, “Can I just get it over with tonight?”

I calculate; school lets out at 2:45. An hour of sitting in silence, and I’m supposed to be at work at four. If I hurry, I can still make my shift at the Curly Q. Which sounds like a diner, but it’s actually a hair salon. I’m not qualified to do anything but wash hair, sweep up, and answer the phone, but it’s better than fast food. I work two afternoons a week from four to eight, which earns me spending money for the week. Since I’m under eighteen, I get paid fifty cents an hour less than an adult; that makes me a bargain. After detention ends, I’ll just need to ride hard to keep Mildred from yelling at me.

Mrs. Palmer glances up from scribbling down my doom. “Can you get a ride home?”

“Yeah.”

I’ve always got my bike out front, and the town is small enough that I can ride anywhere I need to go from school. This is the one positive aspect of living in a tiny berg like this, especially given my opinion of privately-owned fossil fuel burning vehicles, which covers nicely for my lingering fear.

If I was going to feel something, damn it, it would be something good. And it wouldn’t have anything to do with Jack or his memory. It would be mine. My actions. My emotions. My control.

Cal stared at me hard. “What do you see when you look at me?”

The question was so blunt, so honest, I couldn’t escape it. I gazed into his blue eyes and wondered for the thousandth time what my life would have been like if I’d met Cal first. So many doubts and unknowns. But in that moment, the answer to his question was suddenly clear.

“I see my next mistake.”

Without thinking, I grabbed his shirt in my fist, and kissed him hard.

His hand slipped to my nape and he pulled me into him until my lips mashed further against his. I moaned, instantly recognizing him from all those months ago. But this time it wasn’t soft, it was heavy and intoxicating. His free arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me into him, my legs spreading wide until my skirt bunched enough to give room for him to be flush against me.

Every part of him was hard, strong, and surrounded me. I didn’t reach out, didn’t cling to him the way I wanted, because that would be too much. I wouldn’t reach out for anyone again. It wasn’t a smart action, and I’d learned that reaching only gave room for them to pull away.

So, I kissed him, keeping my hand locked on the center of his chest, grabbing only the soft cotton there. I leaned in as he worked his mouth over mine, his tongue seeking and dueling. He pulled me even closer. The thick material of his fire pants scratched the insides of my thighs, and God damn, it felt good. Even better was his hardening cock that hit just the right spot and had me seeing stars behind my closed eyes.

I bit his lip and thrust my tongue hard. Deeper. The wantonness that lay dormant in me was rousing. With every touch, every taste, I awakened a little more. Wanted more. Wanted him.

His stubble rubbed against my chin, delivering a delicious sting as he dove his tongue in deep, tasting everything I was. I itched to wrap my arms around him and pull him closer.

But I stayed strong. Kept my distance.

“You’re avoiding again, Lana,” he said, his tone a little rough. “Perhaps my conversational skills are lacking?”

“Nothing about you is lacking.” That time I slapped a palm over my mouth.

“That’s a shame.” Taking one fingertip, he ran it along the condensation of my drink, then slowly slid it up my knee.

I jolted a little.

“Give me a number, Lana.”

“S-six,” I said with a small stutter.

“Hot.” It was instant, no thought needed, because my body was the one talking. His finger may be cold, but the way it grazed my skin left a heated trail.

“Good. The number I can work with. The cold I can’t.”

SUBJECT TO CHANGE Synopsis:

Joey made her dad a deathbed promise that she would become a doctor, and dedicate herself to fighting the very cancer that took his life. There’s just one problem -three years into her pre-med classes, she’s struggling to stay on top of the curve, let alone prove she’s dazzling enough to earn a spot in an Ivy League medical school. In a Hail Mary move, she throws a basic Business 101 class into her semester schedule, banking on a perfect score to boost her GPA.

That is, until she’s paired for a final project with Hawk, the bartending, motorbike-riding, gorgeously bedheaded loser who falls asleep in class and communicates in one-word sentences.

Hawk does whatever he wants, whenever he wants, which sets Joey on edge – in every possible way. As they get to know each other, her urge to scream at him is curbed only by her fantasies of tearing his clothes off. Soon those fantasies become reality, and Joey realizes Hawk makes her feel more fully herself than any of the rich boys her mother and sorority sisters approve of.

But the promise to her father hangs over her head, and the harder Joey tries to succeed in her chosen career, the faster everything falls into a hopeless tailspin of bad grades, broken promises and guilt. It doesn’t help to have Hawk sitting like a devil on her shoulder, insisting she should be free to live however she wants to live – like he does.

The only thing Joey knows is that her neatly organized life is crushing her – and Hawk’s bad attitude might be the only thing that can save her.

To save the lives of her brother and their friends, Cami must ignore what she sees and what she’s told, and instead must learn to trust the clicks, her instincts, that help her find the truth in heart even when it goes against everything her brain thinks it knows.

She credits her father introducing her to an APAzine in the mid-90s for her love of writing. Bent, her debut novel, was a NaNoWriMo challenge to write 50,000 words in one month. After years of attempting and failing, she finally got through it and this is the result!
