Searching for the truth…

Disgraced investigative journalist Pip West is devastated when she discovers her best friend’s body face-down in a tranquil lake. When cops and federal agents determine that her friend overdosed then drowned, Pip knows they’re mistaken and intends to prove it.

Special Agent Hunt Kincaid doesn’t trust journalists and has no patience for Pip’s delusions, especially since her meddling could reveal why the FBI is interested in her friend’s last days. The dead scientist worked at the cutting edge of vaccine research and might have a connection to a new, weaponized, vaccine-resistant anthrax strain that just hit the black market.

…just turned deadly.

Pip is thrown off her game by grief and her unexpected attraction to the handsome federal agent. Hunt battles the same unwelcome pull, determined to resist the heat that threatens to consume them both. But the more Pip digs, the closer she gets to both the sexy FBI agent, and to a bioweapons terrorist who’s more than capable of cold-bloodedly sacrificing anyone who gets in his way.

Read an excerpt of COLD BLOODED:

Pip climbed to her feet and Hunt watched her walk slowly back toward the cabin. Her eyes were red and swollen.

Not pretty, but there was no denying he was attracted to her. A gnawing hunger was starting to eat at him and it had Pip’s name all over it.

The light was fading fast. He headed back downstairs, went out onto the deck and opened his arms wide. She came to him and leaned against his chest and held on tight, but she didn’t cry. Something told him that despite the fact he’d seen her cry several times over her friend on that first day, Pip West rarely lost control of her emotions. He hugged her tight, enjoying the soft feel of her against him, her scent invading his senses—strawberries and sunshine mixed with a subtle hint of female.

“How’s it look in there?” Her voice was rusty and deep.

Sexy as hell.

He cleared his throat. “There’s fingerprint dust all over the walls. There are firms you can hire to clean it up…”

She shook her head. “I’ll do it myself next time I come up.”

Self-sufficient. Independent.

“You okay to drive back?” he asked.

She nodded and pulled out of his arms. “I’m sorry for falling apart. I guess I needed that. I’ll be fine driving though. Just give me a minute.” She looked up at him and her eyes were almost black in the twilight. His gaze dropped to her lips and the desire to kiss her hit him all over again.

Don’t be a fool.

Anthony heard the bathroom door open before the water began running. Realizing she was taking a bath, his mind filled with lurid images immediately.

What would Thea look like naked? He wondered what color her nipples were, if she had freckles on any other parts of her besides the few that were sprinkled across her nose. Mostly he thought about her being wet and slick from her bath, her skin pink, how she’d smell womanly and sweet afterward.

His cock hardened, and he growled in annoyance. He didn’t need this right now. Pushing the thoughts aside, he concentrated on important matters at hand. Not on his obnoxious roommate, no matter how much he’d like to see her naked.

An hour later, Anthony got up to go downstairs for a beer, only to run into Thea as she was leaving the bathroom. She had a towel wrapped around her, the ends of her short hair slightly curled from the steam. Her skin was pink, just like he’d imagined, and to his immense amusement, she blushed even pinker as he raked her with a seductive gaze.

She was about to scamper away when he asked, “How’s the rabbit?”

“The rabbit?” She blinked. “Oh, um, it’s fine. It drank some water, which is good.”

Anthony didn’t give a damn about the rabbit, not when he could take in Thea standing in front of him, barely clothed. Her toes were curled under her into the rug, her calves shapely. Her towel barely reached to mid-thigh, allowing him to see how pale her skin was.

His gaze continued to skim up her body, where she held the towel closed right above her breasts. Her chest rose and fell, only accentuating her cleavage. Her breasts were small, but he had a feeling they were the perfect size to fit in his mouth.

“Good,” he said, barely hearing what she’d said.

A few bubbles remained on her neck from her bath. Unable to resist temptation, he reached out and brushed the bubbles away with a soft touch.

Her eyes widened. She didn’t say anything, but her eyes said it all. Her breathing quickened, filling Anthony with triumph. She wanted him as much as he wanted her.

“You missed a spot,” he murmured.

She licked her lips. Then she met his gaze, her pupils large, her cheeks flushed. Anthony knew enough about women—about seduction—to know when they wanted him. And Thea was giving him all of the signals, down to the way her feet were pointed toward him, and how she kept touching the ends of her hair and twisting a strand around her finger.

He couldn’t help but brush fingers down the slope of her shoulder. She hitched in a breath.

He wanted to kiss her. No, he needed to kiss her.

And Anthony wasn’t going to stop himself from getting what he needed.

His guiltiest pleasure

She’s wild, wicked…and pure, sexy trouble

It takes a nanosecond for Beth Marchande to see that Ford Lassiter worships rules and order. Yet behind his leonine eyes this gorgeous but tightly wound man is hiding something much deeper than lust. He’s hiding a deliciously raw, hungry need to take control while Beth relinquishes hers. But for this wild, fierce woman there’ll be no holding back his heart…no matter the cost.

As if he’d spoken out loud, Beth’s eyes fluttered open. Lifting her head, she looked across the bar, over to where he sat, aching…and right into his eyes.

Earlier today her eyes had been the color of the afternoon sky, but now they were sapphire fire, the flames licking along his skin. His gut tightened as she smiled lazily, then slowly, sensually disengaged herself from the tangle of limbs. Behind her, the couple continued their dance, but Ford didn’t care—his eyes were on the woman who was crossing the room toward him with slow, deliberate undulations of her hips.

“Fancy meeting you here, Sir Lassiter.” She stopped well into his personal space, and that vanilla perfume made his mouth water and his jaw clench.

Sir?” He arched an eyebrow and tried really hard not to do what he wanted, which was to reach out and place his hands at her waist, to slide her shirt up and feel the warmth of her skin beneath.

“Mmm, you seem like a sir.” Beth smiled and inched closer, stepping right between his spread thighs. He felt his expression darken—she knew exactly what she was doing, what she was asking for.

“What makes you say that?” His instincts told him to tug her flush against his body, to press her to him so she could feel exactly what she was doing to him.

He did not.

“You seem all proper and noble…like an aristocrat. A knight. Sir Lassiter.” Beth nudged forward just a whisper, and he felt the curve of her hip press into his inner thigh.

His mouth went dry.

“Like you’re trying so hard to do what you think is right. But tell me something.” Tilting her head back, she looked up into his eyes, searching. “Why is denying yourself something that you want, that we both want, the right thing? I know you feel it, too.”

Her open question gutted him. He’d been in the boardroom with billionaires, with sheikhs, with sharks, and he’d bested them all.

The little woman who smelled like cupcakes? She was bringing him to his knees.

“I—” He started to explain, but she cut him off, stepping back, her sudden frown breaking the spell.

“I see.” Her lips pinched together in a mockery of a smile. “I’m not the kind of woman you want to get involved with, right? Not even for a night. Let me assure you, that’s your loss.”

Wait…what? “Wait just a damn minute.” When Beth would have turned, Ford did as he’d imagined, catching her by the waist and hauling her back into the vee of his legs. This time her pelvis connected with the steel length of his erection, and he savored her sharp little intake of breath. “What do you mean?”

“I think it’s pretty self-explanatory.” Beth regarded him coldly, though she didn’t back down. “My hair, my tattoos… I’m far too wild for you.”

“Oh, do you think so?” The way she was looking up at him, so certain she was right, was a challenge, and he felt something inside him roaring to life to meet it.

She thought he was turned off because she wasn’t his usual type? Well, he couldn’t deny that she was not at all the kind of woman he was usually drawn to, and his instant attraction to her puzzled him more than a bit.

But that wasn’t the problem. The problem was what she made him feel.

“I don’t give a damn about the color of your hair or the ink on your skin. Got it?” The need to prove that she wasn’t the problem was quickly overriding his sense of restraint, the only other thing that had held him back from accepting her sweet offer that afternoon.

“I don’t know you, yet you make me want things I’m not comfortable wanting. Make me feel things I shouldn’t.” His hands at her waist squeezed, hard, to emphasize his point, and he savored her resultant shudder, which ratcheted up his own excitement.

“Why would you be uncomfortable wanting something if it doesn’t hurt anyone else?” She was watching him again, lids heavy over those big eyes. “Or maybe you think that it is hurting someone?”

He kept his stare on her face, absorbing every nuance of her expression, which was open, honest.

Something told him that Beth Marchande wasn’t going to be disgusted with the demands he might make of her.

“Sometimes a little bit of hurt is good, Sir Lassiter…especially when I’m begging you for it.”

“Fuck.” Dragging his hands up her sides, over her rib cage and the swell of her breasts, Ford clasped Beth by the shoulders and tugged her forward, crushing her smirking lips to his own.

Rather than offering him a kiss as sweet as the vanilla she smelled of, she moaned beneath the pressure and opened, her tongue surging out to tangle with his.

One hand slid behind her head and fisted in the long mane of raven and amethyst hair, just as his fingers had itched to. He tugged her head to the side roughly and then dragged his lips down the column of her throat, settling over her pulse and sinking his teeth in to claim.

“Well, what’s it going to be, Sir Lassiter?” Beth’s breathy question rasped in his ear, and she shuddered when his teeth marked her skin. “Are you going to be good? Or are you going to be bad? What do you think?”

Shoving his glass aside—he felt intoxicated just from being near her—Ford stood, making sure that every plane of his body glided against hers as he did.

Her eyes glittered with the same need that he felt as he quickly pulled a fifty from his wallet and tossed it onto the surface of the bar.

“I think…” Ford deliberately wrapped his fingers around her own, drawing them up to his lips to nip. “I think that we’re going to go back to my room right now. And I’m going to find something better for that smart mouth to do.”

About Lauren Hawkeye

Lauren Hawkeye/ Lauren Jameson never imagined that she’d wind up telling stories for a living… though when she looks back, it’s easy to see that she’s the only one who is surprised. Always “the kid who read all the time”, Lauren made up stories about her favorite characters once she’d finished a book… and once spent an entire year narrating her own life internally. No, really. But where she was just plain odd before publication, now she can at least claim to have an artistic temperament.

Lauren lives in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada with her husband, toddler, pit bull and idiot cat, though they do not live in an igloo, nor do they drive a dogsled. In her nonexistent spare time Lauren can be found knitting (her husband claims that her snobby yarn collection is exorbitant), reading anything she can get her hands on, or sweating her way through spin class. I don’t hear the soft scuff of a shoe against the floor until it’s too late.

The touch on my shoulder is soft, a caress almost. It makes me whirl on my feet, and the gasp I release from my lips is nothing but a scream trapped in my throat as I turn to see a set of green eyes glaring in my direction, a mass of dark hair framing a face seemingly chiseled out of stone.

I stumble backwards, my body falling into the closed curtain. Thick fabric and phantom hands entangle my body, holding me and I flail at both, my fists beating against skin and silk. But the hands are too quick for me. Fingers grip my arms and shoulders, spinning me, and before I can say another word, my lips are clasped shut behind a calloused palm, the soft smell of men’s cologne overwhelming my senses.

I whimper, but it’s no use.

I am trapped. And the knowledge makes me claw. My fingernails break into skin, and as I pull at the fingers over my face, a voice, low and rumbling, ruffles the strands of my hair, puffing slowly over my skin.

“Stop. Stop fighting,” the voice exhales. My chest heaves. Trapped front to back between a man’s torso and locked forearm, my mind goes into panic mode. The panic turns into a frenzy when the voice calls out louder, its reminiscent tone striking some small chord within me.

He breathes my name. “Delilah.”

I mumble, fighting for breath. His hand releases my mouth, moving ever so slowly. I lick my dry lips, my tongue searching for the syllables. “Who…” I swallow, my voice gasping. “Who—who are you?”

“What would be better?” he responds, his words a molten flame, “The ugly truth? Or a pretty lie?” He releases me, stepping back. “Knowing you, I’d almost say I have a better chance with the lie. But then again, wasn’t your job once built on exposing them?”

I turn, still in his arms, and take a deep breath. The fingers that hold me drop, and as I blink slowly, the face in front of me comes into focus, the stranger’s strong features coming into light with every agonizing second that passes.

My heart beats double fast, my throat growing dry. I wrap a hand around my neck, still feeling the warmth of his fingers. My body goes numb.

“Is it…?” I look closer, squinting. “It is you. What the hell are you doing here?”

“Remember to breathe,” he whispers.

“Just kiss me already,” I whisper back, surprised by how much it sounds like a plea.

“Your eyes are still open.”

I immediately shut them.

His soft laugh sends a thrill up my spine. “If only you were that obedient all the time, lass.” He lightly nips my lower lip, a dark, delicious little promise.

My hands. What do I do with my hands? They’re flattened against his chest again, but that seems lame, so I slide them up around his neck…and discover his hair. Good lord. Thick, glossy strands of hair slide like silk between my fingers. It’s longer than any of the men’s at the office, much longer than Michael’s, past the collar of his shirt, dark and waving, exquisitely soft.

As his tongue slowly begins to probe my mouth, I tug on all that gorgeous hair, forgetting I’m not supposed to be enjoying this.

I arch against him, softening, expanding, breathing deeply through my nose as the kiss deepens and begins to burn. I wasn’t kidding when I said he was experienced. He knows exactly what to do, how to get my blood sizzling and my heart hammering and all the pornographic images of him nude and splayed out like the best Christmas gift I’ve ever received pulsing like neon signs inside my head.

My nipples tighten. There’s a new heaviness between my legs, but it’s not him, it’s me, flushed and aching, every pull of his lips sending a spike of heat to that hollow space inside me that I’m becoming acutely aware of, its muted little howls of need.

I break away to check in before I lose myself completely and choke him with my prehensile tongue. “How’m I doing?” I mumble, flushed and out of breath.

His eyes drift open. Hot and dark, they pin me in place. “Jury’s still out,” he says, his voice thick. “Need more evidence.”

His mouth. I will drown in the pleasure of his mouth. I’ll die on this sofa and Mrs. Dinwiddle will find my body, fingers and toes chewed on by the poor starving cat.

The kiss grows decadent. Sinful. I moan, a desperate sound rising from the back of my throat. It has an interesting effect on Cam.

His entire body goes stiff.

He takes my head in both hands, breaks the kiss, and turns his face away. He breathes raggedly for a few moments, his nostrils flared and his jaw like granite. With his fingers pressed into my scalp, he says roughly, “You can’t make noises like that.”

Oh God. I sound like a warthog. A donkey. A trained pig, snuffling through the underbrush in search of truffles. “Okay.”

The humiliation in my voice makes his eyes slash to mine. “It’s not bad. It’s just…distracting.”

He slightly shifts his weight, and things are clarified.

I bite my lip so hard I might have drawn blood. My heart is a hummingbird beating frantically against a cage. I whisper, “You said you wouldn’t get aroused.”

He looks at my mouth like a warlord looking over a kingdom he’s just seized. “I lied.”

A kiss again, dangerous, like standing at the edge of a cliff and looking over, shifting dirt and rocks tumbling beneath your feet. My fingers twist in his hair. His hands move my head, left or right, however he wants it, a throbbing pulse like drumbeats in my ears. I’m so turned on I feel frantic, unstable, like I might break out of my own skin.

Caterpillar becoming butterfly. Chrysalis shed, wings outstretched, wind beneath my belly. Caught on an updraft. Beating, beating, flying free.

He breaks the kiss, suddenly, shatteringly, the separation like breaking glass. Dizzy, I whimper at the loss of his mouth.

“Fuck. Joellen. Fuck.”

He’s panting, his voice a desperate rasp. He radiates heat like a furnace. Even his hands on my head are hot, burning right through my skull.

With his scent in my nose and his heat wrapped around me and his heart pounding against mine, I’m somewhere else. I’m someone else. A gypsy, casting spells. A sloe-eyed singer in a smoky jazz club. A femme fatale in a film noir, all knowing smiles and long legs and a throaty voice with an edge like a purr.

“Don’t stop,” I say in my new voice. “You taste so good.”

He stares right at me, his eyes intensely aglow. Tiger eyes. Wolf eyes. The eyes of a predator about to pounce on his meal.

He growls, “You like the way I taste?”

There’s a challenge in the question. Other than his ragged breathing, he’s so still, every muscle tensed.

What’s happening?

I come back to myself abruptly, all at once aware of how far this little experiment has gone, how dangerously close it is to the point of no return, and the cat up on the kitchen table eating the remains of Cam’s dinner from his plate.

Oh shit. My face floods with heat.

I’m not a gypsy. I’m not a femme fatale. I’m an awkward, lonely woman sitting on the lap of the most famous athlete on the planet, making an utter fool of myself.

Everyone in Cedar Creek, Texas, knows Jack McNight is an arrogant devil. Physically, I get it: he’s tan and fit, with coal-black hair that’s clearly been scorched by hellfire. Oh, and his personality? It burns just as hot.

When I show up on the doorstep of Blue Stone Ranch, I’m run-down and rockin’ my last pair of underwear. I’m hoping for a savior, but instead, I find him.

My opinion of Jack is marred by a dismal first impression, but his opinion of me is tainted even before I arrive. He’s heard I’m a spoiled princess there to take advantage of his goodwill. To him, I’m more trouble than I’m worth.

Our button-pushing banter should get under my skin. His arrogance should be a major turn-off. Problem is, devils are known to offer their own form of temptation.

Every one of his steely glares sends a shiver down my spine.

Every steamy encounter leaves me reeling.

Sure, it could be the Texas heat messing with my head, but there’s no way I’ll survive the summer without silencing him with a kiss and wrestling him out of those Wranglers.

Who knows…going to bed with the devil might just be the salvation I’ve been looking for all along.

When I stepped out of the cab, it seemed to me that only Maddie’s car was parked here. I stepped through the front gate and scanned the grounds. The rain soaked me in seconds. I had to use my palm as protection over my eyes to keep the rain from stabbing my eyeballs. The entire yard seemed covered in some sort of plastic tarp. Only the wooden trail was uncovered. I didn’t see Maddie, and my shoulders felt lighter. But as I finished scanning the front yard, movement on the far left caught my attention.

I groaned. There she was, her hands maneuvering the end of the tarp. And she was… arguing with herself? I couldn’t tell, but she was talking and shaking her head, and there was no one around. I headed straight toward her.

“What are you doing out here?” I tapped her shoulder, but she still startled, whirling around.

“I need to secure the cover with spikes,” she explained.

“Where are the guys?”

“They quit.”

“Maddie, let’s go inside. You can finish this when the rain eases a bit.”

She shook her head. “If I don’t secure this, there’s a risk the rain will dislodge the earth.” As far as I could see, there were spikes at regular intervals. The cover looked pretty fucking secure to me.

“Maddie, you’re soaked. I’m soaked.”

“Then go inside. I need to finish this.”

She kept fumbling with a spike, and I gripped both her wrists, looking straight at her. “Maddie, stop being so stubborn or I swear I’ll throw you over my shoulder and take you inside.”

She wiggled a hand out of my grip, then held the finger up warningly. “You just don’t get this.”

Except I did. I knew that feverish need to keep fixing what you could when a problem escalated until it was out of your control. I found myself in such situations at least twice a month at the office, and working through it always got me to the other end. But I wasn’t about to let Maddie give herself pneumonia.

She tried to wiggle her other hand out of my grip, but I tightened my fingers on her skin. I was scanning her body, weighing what the easiest way would be to toss her over my shoulders when she exclaimed, “Oh my God, you’re seriously going to throw me over your shoulder.”

She dropped the spike she was still gripping in the hand I held captive and started marching toward the house. I walked next to her, releasing her hand but keeping my eyes trained on her in case she changed her mind. When we stepped out of the rain and onto the porch, I took a good look at her. Her gray shirt was soaked and transparent, and I could see her black bra, the swell of her breasts where the fabric gave way to skin. Longing thrummed through me, to touch her, taste her. I wondered if she was wearing matching panties, but I didn’t have to wonder for too long. Her pants—not jeans, but some thinner fabric—were as transparent as her shirt. She was wearing a black thong, the thin scrap of fabric at the back running right over her crack, leaving her round ass cheeks in plain view. My fingers itched with the impulse to remove that thong, touch and lick all the places it had covered.

“You are unbelievable.” She took the elastic band out of her hair and squeezed the water out of her blonde tresses before whirling to face me. Stepping closer, she poked my chest. “Unbelievable. Who does that?”

“Who stays out in a torrential rain?” I countered, trying to ignore the bolt of heat her touch had sent through me.

“Someone who wants to finish a job.” She poked me again, and I caught her wrist because if she touched me one more time, I couldn’t be held responsible for my actions. Her mouth was so close. Pink and plump, and I knew she’d be soft and sweet. She licked her lower lip, her own gaze pinned on my shirt. When our eyes met, she brought her free hand to my chest, and I exhaled sharply.

I leaned in and captured her mouth. She parted her lips with a sigh, allowing me entrance. Her taste! I could get addicted to it, to the way she gave herself to me, without restraint or reservations. I let go of her wrist and moved one hand to her waist, fisted her hair with the other, angling her head so I could explore her mouth better. Slipping my hand down from her waist, I cupped her ass, pulling her flat against me. She groaned in my mouth when my erection pressed along her belly.

I was going to kiss her until her legs shook.

Mace was making a fucking mistake, and he didn’t care. Adrienne tasted like sin and seduction, and he knew if he stopped kissing her, he’d let his mind wander to what the hell he was doing, and he’d fuck up everything even more.

So, he kept kissing her.

And then he took it deeper. His fingers tangled in her hair, and she slid her hands up his chest, digging into his flesh. Their moans were lost in the wind and rain outside as it beat down on the bathroom window, and he couldn’t help but explore her mouth.

He’d thought about doing this countless times; thought about tasting her, having her. He’d imagined himself licking up her neck and down between her breasts before devouring her everywhere else. He’d thought about how she’d arch into him as he plunged into her, and they’d both come, panting and sweaty.

He’d thought about all of it because he’d been attracted to Addi from day one, but had never wanted to hurt their friendship. That was still the case because she was the most important adult in his life, the strongest relationship he had with another person besides Daisy.

So why was he still kissing her? Mace was about to pull back when she leaned in closer, her breasts pressing into his chest.

And when her hands slid around to his back to cling to him, he knew there would be no getting out of this mistake just then.

They’d deal with the consequences later because that’s what they did. They were strong enough to deal with anything, and right then, all he wanted to do was bury himself inside his best friend and never stop.

So, he didn’t.

Men. Manuscripts. And Manolos…

I was failing at two of the three.

Dating life aside, when you’re an agent for a successful publishing press, climbing the corporate ladder isn’t your biggest problem… Staying there is.

So, when the biggest football star in the world wants to write a tell-all about his life and career, I put my bid in right at the top.

My only issue?

Mr. Playboy Pro is none other than Colton Evans, my CEO’s step-brother.

A walking wet dream with dark features and an even darker past, I find that behind the fan-favorite smile is an arrogant bastard.

The worst part? I think I like it.

But when getting to the truth of Colton’s sordid story takes an unexpected turn to trouble, everything I love will be on the line, including my job… and my heart.

Read the Prologue of SWEET REVENGE

There’s only three ways to deal with the world when about half of the English-speaking people in it know your name by heart.

And I’ve failed at all three.

It was the fame. A large part of me fucking hated it.

I couldn’t ignore it. Couldn’t embrace it. And when I tried to dive dick first into it and literally fuck the world, that plan fell stale, a taste that long stopped having any flavor.

That third method of coping with international stardom… is why I’m here right now.

At this event. In this very state. Standing in an overpriced pool house on an overcast grey May day, staring at myself. I meet my own smoky blue eyes in the rain-streaked glass as I try to shake off seven whole nights without sleep.

I can tell one thing: The Florida fucking heat isn’t helping.

But the least helpful part of it all is the woman on her knees gazing up at me, her green eyes pleading, her pink mouth pressed into an “O” as she inches toward me…like a human Eureka vacuum cleaner, ready to suck me into oblivion. I stare at her, feeling the effects of the tequila in my system… and nothing more.

I’d tell her to leave, but old habits die hard. Old obsessions die even harder, and despite my need to have nothing to do with the woman currently crawling to me on the tiled floor, my cock is still half solid, a dull passion stirring in me as I tell myself to get it over with.

My fuck fix. To quit it and head home.

I shouldn’t have come here anyway. I should be getting ready for the season. Not traveling a hundred miles to see a man who wants nothing to do with me, to a wedding I wasn’t even fucking invited to…

Hiding out in the pool house hasn’t worked. Ol’ dustbuster on her knees found me. It’s only a matter of time before others do, including the paparazzi, whose cameras I’ve been trying to avoid for three days in the wake of another rumor about me and some stoned-out starlet—a rumor that, like the recent others, are so wrong it’s laughable.

But I can’t shake the slimy bastards. And I remember when I used to eat this shit up, devour the adoration for breakfast, drink from the well of women, money and notoriety at night.

Such were the “perks” of stardom, the tumbles on the quest for success. A success nobody ever saw for me… including my own father. I was his bastard, his dirty little secret…

My mother was a convenient fuck for him, his mistress by proxy. Nothing more.

The great Victor Foxx barely acknowledged the other son he fathered, and on the few chances he did, this son—the brown-haired, bright-eyed boy I’d been, had worshiped him, wondering where he went every time he stepped out of the door, not knowing for years that it was to his other child—the one that mattered.

Being a family was something we never could be….

Not when one side of the family grew up as trash, and the other as royalty. I could never be a true Foxx like Brendon, Victor’s darling boy. The prince and the pauper story couldn’t have been more true. Only back then… I was the pauper. And in our father’s eyes, Brendon would always be the prince.

We were two sides of a fucked-up coin.

I barely blinked when my publicist first mentioned how the book I’d written might bring down my very distant brother with it because truly, if that was the case, then so be it. It’s not like my “brother” ever gave a fuck. He sneered at our side of the family, and it didn’t take being ignored for years upon years to be reminded of that fact.

The truth?

I was going to get my sweet revenge against my father, Victor Foxx, either way, and if that meant that my step-brother/half-brother/whatever-the-fuck was going to take a tumble with dear old dad, well… That might even make the revenge just that more sweet.

I think of the tell-all I’ve written and find my libido again, my cock finally stirring to stand straight up. I grab the girl as she finally slithers between my legs, pulling her to her feet, knowing I need to make this quick. She yelps as she starts to stand on her two heels, her eyes excited and wide, her exhales breathy as I turn her towards the back of the couch, sliding my body behind hers, trying to will my hard-on to stay up.

Fuck, I’m out of practice…and hoping that the present will live up to my wild past. I rumble in her ear.

“Spread your legs.” And she widens her stance, shivering. Reaching for the hem of her black pencil skirt,

I slide my hands along the outside of her thighs. I’m just skimming her hips when the sound of loud laughing pulls my attention to the door, keeping it.

We’ve got some visitors, unwelcome ones at that. A man in a black tux and bridesmaid in peach. The woman is a fucking knockout. It’s the only thought I allow myself to have as I make a rush for the bathroom door, pinning my little blower girl behind it. I close it softly, listening to the conversation beyond it.

My breathing grows even.

“Shit,” the man curses. “That was a close one.”

“I know,” the woman breathes on a laugh. I hear rustling and couch cushions give way as the couple plops down in the main room where we just were.

“We almost got caught boning by Foxx’s batty step-mom…” The admission makes my breathing stop completely. “But what would have been worse,” the stranger continues, “is if Foxx had caught her there. I don’t care how many years it’s been. If Foxx caught his father’s other family at his wedding, he’d flip his shit.”

“But isn’t she like a mom to him?” the woman asks.

“No,” I hear from the other side. “She was his father’s mistress. Two completely different things. Foxx’s father fucks up in his affair, has a kid. Foxx’s mother leaves his cheating bastard of a dad to head back to Bumfuck, Tennessee—has a total breakdown. I met his mom from time to time, when I was growing up. Fucking meltdown city. The mistress made off with a settlement to keep quiet… and Foxx isn’t an easy one to forgive and forget.” He stops. “I don’t know even know what she was doing here.”

“Invited by the blushing bride, most likely,” she murmurs. “Man, my sister sure knows how to screw up a good time.”

“Tell me about it.” I hear the soft, muffled sound of lips touching. “I didn’t even get to make you come yet…” The voice trails off to the sounds of tittering in return. “But there’s still time before the reception…” The tittering turns to moans, and just when things start to get really interesting, the noises stop, followed by a crescendo of flutes and violins.

The reception is beginning.

“Fuck. Fuckfuckfuck,” the blonde out there swears. “We’ve gotta go.”

“Dammit, Elena,” the man in the tux grits out. “Five fucking minutes.”

“No,” she laughs.

“Three…” he pauses. “And a half.”

“Come on,” she beckons. The couch cushions groan. “We’ve gotta go before we’re missed.”

The sounds of footsteps echo outwards away from the bathroom. Heavy glass slides across the floor and with my ear to the wood, I finally hear the footsteps go faint as they head down the small hall and out the door. The screen door shuts with a clang, and I listen closer. When at last I hear nothing but the music, I make my way out into the main floor, tugging my Eureka sucker behind me.

When I walk out onto the floor, the door opens once more. And this time, it’s the man of the hour—Foxx, standing there, looking at me. His white collar is undone, his tuxedo cummerbund half-hangs as he stares in my direction, his face unmoving, his jaw twitching as he clenches his elegant black bow tie. A bow tie belonging to a groom.

Looking nothing like a man who’s just been married, I can see the anger in his eyes, his face growing hard and rigid beneath a slick blond mane that grows paler with each ticking second. His eyes flit to the woman behind me, then back at my face. He exhales with a sigh, his shoulders falling.

His voice is gritty. “Hello, Colton.”

I glare back. “Hello… brother.”

Love is the strongest emotion in the world…next to hate.

I knew hate. Had known it since I was seventeen. For me, it was love turned on its head, a product of hurt and fear—twisted, tied up…and placed on the sculpted shoulders of Ethan Riske.

Dayton, Tennessee.

Home to the best cow-tipping in the world, the biggest hot dogs, and the lousiest sex.

Or so I’d heard…

They were right about the first two. Ethan Riske proved them wrong about the third and at seventeen, he and I spent a summer under the stars, squeezing our way out of trouble, sweating and panting among the haystacks.

Until he left.

Nine years later, when a huge publishing house tries to buy my small press, I storm into the office of the CEO to find him.

Same cocky grin. Different name.

And suddenly all I can think about is exacting revenge on Ethan Riske for breaking his contract…and my heart.

But there’s someone who wants revenge even more than I do. As I begin to fall for the new Ethan, will the sins of the old one come back to haunt us?

My name is Lukas Griffin, and I put the “cock” in the word “cocky”…amongst other things, of course. The only exception to this rule…is her.

I’d simplified my life into a three-part process:
I binged. I screwed. I came…right up until the moments when I would come to.

And I was content with it staying that way.

Until I met her. For the first time. At the engagement party…we both planned.

Mouthy dancer.
Blonde bombshell.

My best friend’s soon to be sister-in-law.

Enemies before we’d ever laid eyes on each other, we were a match made in Hell—a cautionary tale of how not to get along.

But when we unwittingly enter a game where enemies are lovers, family can’t be friends and friends become enemies, can we prevent the spark between us from turning into a deadly inferno?

Read an excerpt from MIDNIGHT VALENTINE:

“Hi, there, Megan, this is Coop.”

“Hi, Coop. What’s up?”

Long, awkward pause.

“Uh…I’m still standin’ outside your house.”

I walk to the windows, and there he is, out on the sidewalk near his truck.

“Are you having car problems?”

“No, I’m, uh, just waitin’ on Theo. He’s comin’ out to see you. I texted him what you said, and, uh…” Coop clears his throat. “Well, anyway, he’s on his way. I thought I’d give you a heads-up.”

The circus never stops with this guy. “That’s unfortunate, Coop, because I just got off the phone with Craig from Capstone. He’s going to handle the job.”

Coop scoffs. “Craig? That self-important S.O.B.? You like flushin’ your money down the toilet?”

“No, I don’t. Which is why I negotiated a discount.”

“Lemme guess. He probably quoted you…” He thinks for a moment, looking up at the house, then names a number which is only a few hundred dollars off from Craig’s quote, which is very irritating.

“You seem like a nice guy, Coop, but this conversation is pointless, considering your boss has no interest in working with me.”

“I never said that,” he says quickly. Our gazes meet through the window. I see how serious he is suddenly, his easy grin nowhere in sight.

“I wasn’t going to tell him you did,” I say, sensing this is somehow a matter of great importance.

When Coop blows out a breath, looking relieved, my hunch is proven right. Before I can say anything else, however, he straightens, looking down the street.

“He’s here.” He flashes me a look full of warning, then hangs up, steps out into the street, and holds up a hand.

Fascinated, I watch as a classic Mustang slowly rolls up the street, engine rumbling. It’s black, with windows tinted so dark I can’t see inside, and chrome wheels that gleam in the sun. The car stops in the middle of the street, then Coop walks over and bends down to the driver’s side window.

Several minutes pass and Coop is still standing there, talking to Theo. Or drawing pictures or whatever it is he does to communicate with Mr. Incommunicado.

“What the hell is it with this guy?” I mutter, growing more irritated by the moment.

Finally Coop straightens and the Mustang pulls up to the curb. The engine shuts off. I want to look away, but I’m rooted to the spot, staring out the front parlor window, waiting for what feels like an eternity until the driver’s door opens and Theo steps out.

Black hair.

It’s my first thought when his broad shoulders rise up over the roof of the car. I’ve only seen him in a raincoat, his head covered, but now I see he has a lot of thick, black hair, the length past the collar of his leather jacket. It’s messy. Windswept and untamed, like he only ever combs it with his fingers.

When he turns and looks toward the house, it’s like he knew exactly where I was standing. Our eyes meet with the sensation of a key fitting into a lock: a smooth, inevitable click.

A tremor runs through me, something close to fear but more primal, a pulse of restless energy that makes me want to break into a run.

I’ve never met anyone with more naked emotion in his eyes. His face is stony, but his eyes burn with a thousand unspoken things, all of which are dark.

I resist the urge to step back. We stare at each other until it becomes uncomfortable. I move first, turning to head to the front door, taking deep breaths to calm the sudden throbbing of my heart.

When I open the door, Coop and Theo are walking up the brick pathway toward the porch. Coop is in the lead, smiling nervously. “Hi, Megan!” he calls, as if he hasn’t seen me in forever.

“Hi, Coop. Long time no see.”

Coop ambles up the steps onto the porch that wraps around the front of the house, but Theo stops at the first step and looks at me, as if for permission.

“Sure, Dracula,” I say drily, unamused by this strange situation. “You’re welcome to come in. I’ll put away the garlic and crosses.”

A muscle in his jaw flexes. He doesn’t look amused, either. He steps slowly up, one big boot at a time, until he’s on the porch and I have to look up as he walks toward me with thunderclouds churning over his head. He stops a few feet away and stares down at me as Coop looks back and forth between us, visibly worried.

But I can’t pay attention to Coop anymore. Not with the boiling cauldron standing in front of me. The rumbling mountain of magma about to blow. The seething pool of silent emotions clad in a leather jacket and jeans. If I were a cop, I’d arrest this guy on the spot for disturbing the peace. All by himself, he’s a riot threatening to destroy the entire town.

On the left side of his neck, a snarl of scar tissue peeks over the collar of his shirt. His nose was broken once and not fixed well. There’s a ragged white scar above his left eyebrow that disappears into his hairline, and he walks with a barely perceptible limp, favoring his left side. And those dark, dark eyes. God, how they burn.

Whatever the accident was that he was involved in, it’s left its mark on this man, in more ways than one.
