About Innocence:

INNOCENCEFront150dpi (1)

I can never go back to the way life was before that awful night. Even though I’m unable to remember what happened, I refuse to believe the image they painted of me in the courtroom.

The pieces won’t fit together. Blurred images haunt my dreams. I needed a fresh start, somewhere I wouldn’t be judged, a place to salvage a life beyond the one I was currently living.

At the urging of my father, I headed to Montana to start a new life and put the past where it belonged—in the past. What I didn’t expect was to find a man with the ability to pull me out of those dark places I’d barely been existing in.

Just when the life I never thought I deserved was within reach, the ghosts of my past began haunting me—threatening to take everything away.

Would the light finally push through the darkness? Would I ever be free? Or will I forever be sentenced?

It was too early to have anyone here unless there was a problem. Quickly, I wiped my mouth and headed to the door. The early-morning angle of the sun blinded me for a second before I was able to focus. Two figures before me held a bouquet of wildflowers. I gasped as my hand gravitated toward my mouth.

“Dad says you bring a girl flowers when you like her. We like you, London.” Ty thrust the wildflowers at me and I smiled. “Do you …like us?” Before I had the chance to answer, he looked up to his father. “Dad what do girls bring guys they like?”

His green eyes pierced mine and those familiar butterflies returned. I had it bad for this man. “They give us their love.”

My heart exploded. I’d never been romanced before. Of course, I went on dates, but Charles and I dated for so long we were complacent. Kneeling, I took the bouquet from Ty with his eyebrows puckered. I gave him a hug. “Thank you for the flowers.”

The sweet delicious smell permeated the air. I loved wildflowers. They were perfectly imperfect with their beauty.

Tiny fingers motioned for me to come closer for a secret. In a loud whisper, he responded. “It’s okay if you want to give me more than love. Like a super hero or something.”

It’s uncontrollable.
It’s irrational.
Rage can become just like a fire, clearing all in its path, killing anything that gets in its way. That’s what happens to a man when the woman he desires is put in harm’s way.
He doesn’t care what happens to him. He protects what is his. He doesn’t apologize for what he has to do. He strikes without hesitation.
He is Bane … and he will protect her.

Exclusive Excerpt

I was done. Finished. Out.
For the past seven years, I belonged to a division of the government that wasn’t on the books. I operated alone. There was a mission: I either failed or succeeded. If I failed, that meant I was dead.
After all the shit I’d seen, done, caused—I survived. It was a fucking miracle.
I was the best at what I did, but there were times I saw my life flash before my eyes. But when you’re the government’s covert assassin, what else was there to expect. If I was captured, I didn’t exist. If I died, I didn’t exist. If I succeeded, I was assigned my next mission.
The plane wheels screeched as I touched down in Alaska. Finally, I was where I wanted to be.
At times, I wasn’t sure I knew who I was anymore. My identity was erased from the system long ago. For the last three months, I’d been working on getting released from the program. It was a slow process with how deep I was in with Black Division.
Those suits knew I wouldn’t share anything I’d done. Hell, half the time I wanted to forget. After three months of debriefing, the government let me out. Of course, there was an underlying threat.
If we so much as suspect you’ve betrayed this country, consider yourself dead, Mr. Bradley.
Yeah, nothing else was new. I wasn’t an idiot. I knew I’d be monitored for years to come, but they wouldn’t find anything.

Exclusive Excerpt:

My head throbbed. The one thing I wanted, I couldn’t have—to crawl in bed with my mom while I asked her endless questions about what I should do. It was against the Keeper’s command to waste time thinking on anything that wasn’t productive. All thoughts were to be used for betterment of The Society. That was hard for me as I constantly desired to learn more.

I thought back on the last minutes with my mom.

Candles were lit on every surface, letting The Light know my mom neared the end. It was a haunting site. The Keeper’s raspy voice broke the silence. “Anita, your light has shown bright and will live on in Sarah. You will continue to burn bright in the light hereafter.”

My mom closed her eyes in acknowledgment. Speech had stopped hours ago as it exhausted her.

A week ago, she started not feeling well. We tried all of the herbal remedies, but she never got better. It was a mysterious disease that took one to two people every year from our group. The sickness started as an extreme headache and quickly turned to excessive vomiting.

Now, not seven days later, she lay in her bed dying and my world was falling apart.

The Keeper laid his hand on top of Mom’s and looked at me. His steel-colored beady eyes made me feel queasy. “Sarah, we shall give you a few minutes alone with your mom as time is coming. We shall all be downstairs.” A tear seeped from my mom’s eye. She appeared as scared as I felt. How was I going to survive here without her? As soon as we were left alone, I lunged toward my mom’s bed as I allowed the fear of the situation to take root in my mind.

“Mom, please don’t leave me. I can’t bear to think of a world that you’re not in. You’re my everything,” I sobbed.

My mom’s hand shook as it came to my face. Her fingernails had become dry, cracked and discolored. The herbalist said it was from lack of nutrition since my mom couldn’t keep anything down. I leaned into the touch before she had to drop her hand while I tried to memorize what it felt like to be near her—warm and loving.

She softly spoke, “Sarah, I should have told you sooner, but we haven’t been alone since I got sick. The truth is in an envelope in the bottom of the locked chest in the attic. The key is hidden underneath your nightstand. There’s not much time.”

I became desperate. “Mom, please don’t go.” A sob erupted. “Please. Please.”

Her eyes closed. “Shh…sweetheart. I thought I had more time to prepare. You’re not going to understand what I’m about to say, but it’s the truth. Your real name is Kenzie Brooks. If you want a choice and a say in your life, read the letter. Your inquisitive mind belongs in the world.”

My heart raced frantically. Kenzie Brooks. I’m Sarah. The world. Choice. Life. Those words were jumbled in my head as my mom’s breathing became more labored. My breathing increased while panic took over. “Mom, please. I don’t know what you’re saying. I don’t understand.”

We spoke in hushed whispers. “Kenzie, I love you. You are the light in my world. I’m so sorry for the choices I made, but know that I have loved you with my entire heart. Never doubt that.”

Mom stopped and took a few breaths. These were moments I was supposed to treasure, not be told secrets that would change my life more than it was. I wanted to argue with her, but she didn’t have much time. Her hand got colder. These were the last moments I would ever have with my mom. I wasn’t prepared to be left alone. I wasn’t strong enough to survive without her.

She continued, her voice growing weaker. “Regardless of what you think of my decision, know that I loved you. I tried to do what was best for you.”

Closing her eyes for a moment, they fluttered open as I spoke, “I love you, Mom. I will love you regardless of what the letter says. Know that. Always know that I’ll never stop loving you.”

“You’re so strong, my sweet Kenzie.” Mom’s eyes fully closed. A few more breaths followed, then she exhaled her last breath.

She was gone. Forever.

The room seemed dimmer without her in it. I crawled up in bed with Mom and sobbed as I held onto her. My body racked with uncontrolled sadness as I lost the only thing I cared about in this world.

She was gone. I was alone. Those two words echoed in my head—gone and alone.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The rain pelted my face, making my tears obsolete on the dreariest day of my life. I watched the wooden coffin being lowered into the ground with long leather straps. My world had changed in a matter of moments.

Part of me wished I could go back to those precious seconds before my mom had revealed the truth about my name. What I thought had been real was actually a lie.

A lie.

The coffin touched down on the soaked earth. Three men, known as Watchers in our private society, were to the right of the burial hole. They pulled the leather straps from underneath the coffin, causing a sound that had me gritting my teeth.

These were the last moments before my mom would be buried for all eternity. Forever is a long time. It has no end and no beginning.

The Watchers, men over eighteen years of age who had taken an oath of commitment to The Light, stepped away from the grave. Most of the time, they were nineteen before they officially took the title due to the extreme training and discipline of the teachings. Essentially, they watched over our way of life, keeping it pure and simple, ensuring all of our laws were followed. The outside world was filled with sin and was doomed. Sometimes, I felt the position was used as a way to keep females uninformed. Questioning thoughts were not appropriate according to the teachings.

The rain continued as the men put their hands behind their backs and looked toward the Keeper, the leader of our community.

We never spoke of the outside world. There were things we needed from it to survive, but we peacefully coexisted. All of my life, I stayed within the walls of our community called The Society. At the back of my mind, I always wondered what life was like beyond the borders.

Stoically, I stood at the head of the burial hole next to the Keeper.   An eerie chill ran down my spine being so close to him. Normally, I tried to avoid his presence at all costs.

Lightning struck and I had to fight not to flinch. We patiently waited until the Keeper deemed it time to speak. The Keeper made all the laws and saw to it that visions he received from The Light became realty. I never understood what The Light was, but to question it was blasphemy. Basically, we were to blindly follow. Something never seemed right with that thought process, but that was life.

Exclusive Excerpt:

She moved her head to one side. “I’m not a submissive. I don’t know the ins and outs of all that, but I know that’s not for me.”

She was all business, and I liked that about her. She wasn’t doing all that lovey-dovey giggle shit.

I relaxed my posture in my seat since she hadn’t said no. “I’m not asking for a submissive. We’ll both give each other what we need on equal ground. We’ll never do anything you are uncomfortable with.”

She let my words absorb. My eyes kept going to her top. It was a low-scoop green silk shirt. The club was cold, and as she shifted, I could make out the faint outline of her nipples.

Ainsley also relaxed her posture slightly as she leaned back in the chair. “And what do you need, Adam?”

“To fuck you hard, countless times, to be buried so deep inside you while you scream in pleasure—that’s what I want out of this, Ainsley. Lust and sex, that’s it.”
