FAUX PAS by Natasha Madison – Release Day

Meghan
Five days in Paris sounded like a great idea for three friends. Especially when amazing wine was in play.

It didn’t matter that our rented “apartment” only had one bed, and barely enough space to breathe, we were in Paris and our motto was c’est la vie.

Nothing would faze us, not even the rude waiter at the first restaurant we went to, or the insanely hot manger who was insulted when a bottle of wine was returned.

Nothing could bring me down or knock me off my path to the best vacation of my life.

Alex

I had six days in Paris and then I’d go back to my wine vineyard. It was smooth sailing, until three “americans” came into the restaurant and returned my newest full bodied, savory creation.

I ignored her until she stormed out of the restaurant looking for a taxi at one in the morning. I couldn’t leave her wandering around the streets of Paris, could I?

I’d give her a ride, make sure she was safe, and my duty would be done. Except, was it?

Something about her pulled me.

This could be a vacation fling. After all, there is no real reason for her to know my interesting secret.

I’m France’s most eligible bachelor.

This faux pair is almost a faux pas…

When her nose isn’t buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she’s in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It’s a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn’t listen to her…

About FORTUNATE ENCOUNTERS

Sitting at the wrong table turned my life upside down.

I was supposed to be on a date with one man but made a huge mistake—a mistake I keep bumping into all over New York City.

Clark Chambers is arrogant, straightforward, devastatingly handsome, and takes what he wants. And right now his sight is set on me.

But he only wants friends with benefits. And I’d rather eat dirt than agree to that.

After an “enough is enough” moment, I turn to the Universe for help & ask for a special sign.

And it’s just my luck … looks like rabbits & romance really do mix!

“You want some sexy tea?” Aunt Edie asks, thrusting a green tea mug at me.

I don’t ask her what “sexy tea” is because she may answer me, and I don’t want to hear her explain it.

“How’s Donny?” I ask, taking my first sip of what turns out to be savory honey tea.

“Who?” She tilts her head to the side.

I glance around her house to see if I can find a photo of him but come up empty.

“Did I get his name wrong? Weren’t you dating a guy named Donny?”

She brought him to a Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma and Grandpa’s house many years ago. Mom threw a fit at how disgraceful that was. To quote mom, he was a “hippie drug addict who did not belong at our table.” Mom has always looked down upon my aunt; Mom looks down on everyone.

“Oh, Donny! That dude is long gone, girl, get with the program.” She flips her silver hair behind her shoulder. “I’m dating Dean now. And Bruno. And Craig.”

I nearly choke on my tea, which burns my throat.  “You have three boyfriends?”

She doesn’t even bat an eyelash to confirm my shock. My aunt is a player.

“You didn’t come here to talk about my love life,” she says before she takes a nice long sip of her own sexy tea, “did you?” Her eyes go wide.

How do I even say this without sounding like a nut?

“I need you to help me ask for a sign,” I whisper.

“I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes? That kind of sign?” She sings the catchy tune, completely teasing me for being shy about all of this.

I laugh and drop my head into my hands in defeat.

“Okay, fine. I’m kind of dating this guy. But I’m also kind of not.” I nod my head along as I search for the right words. Aunt Edie just stares, waiting for me to continue. “And I want to know what I should do—ditch him or stick around. When I break it all down in my head, I know I should go. But there’s some kind of pull he has over me, that makes me want to stay. Is there something I can do to help me figure that out?”

I can’t believe I just said this to another living soul. Even hearing myself say it aloud embarrasses me.

“Have you tried making a pros and cons list?” Aunt Edie asks. She takes her red glasses off the top of her head and places them on her face, trying to look serious.

A list? She wants to know if I made a list?

This is not the advice I was expecting when I came here. This is the kind of advice my type-A personality could give myself. I’ve already made a list.

She watches the internal battle I’m having and then busts out laughing.

“Okay, okay, that was too fun. I’d never say make a list. How boring.” Aunt Edie gets up from the chair she was just sitting cross-legged in and walks over to a cabinet. She opens a drawer, pulls out a gold velvet pouch, and returns to her seat. “I want you to pick a crystal.”

She turns the pouch over and dumps out an assortment of gems on the table between us.

“What am I picking a crystal for?” I ask, looking at all the varieties in color, size, and shape.

“Why do you have so many questions? Just put your hand over the crystals and see which one speaks to you.”

It’s like she’s not even speaking English. Which one speaks to me? I didn’t know these were magical crystals that could talk.

“What are these things going to say? Hola, como estas?” I laugh, but Aunt Edie does not.

She raises her eyebrows and then nods her head in the direction of the crystals. She means business. “Pick one.”

Doing as she instructs because I’m a little scared of her, I place my hands in the air above the gems and wave them around. Nothing “speaks to me” but I grab the prettiest one.

“Hold it between your hands.” Aunt Edie also picks up a crystal and does as she tells me to do. “Now I want you to do whatever you see fit to get the crystal’s energy to connect with you—run it between your palms, squeeze it, kiss it, dance around the room with it, strip off your clothes and rub it on your body. Whatever you want.”

I stare at my aunt and then down to the pink gem sitting in the palm of my right hand. Dance with it? Strip naked? She’s out of her mind. I take the easy route and roll it between my palms until it warms up. Is this the energy she’s talking about?

No, that’s friction, you fool.

“Now I want you to channel your crystal’s energy when you ask the gorgeous, abundant Universe to send you a sign about your honey man. Say that you want to see a sign if you are supposed to stay with him.”

“What kind of sign?” I ask, sitting on the edge of my seat. I need all the answers. I’m a complete beginner at all this woo-woo stuff.

“Whatever sign you want.”

She says it like it’s so normal.

“I want to see …”

Aunt Edie cuts me off by waving her hands around. “Don’t say it like you don’t even mean it. That was totally lame. That’s how you want to speak to The Universe? With a tired, monotone voice—no, no, no. Do it again.”

My heart races, and my palms are sweating, with a now clammy crystal in my weak grasp.

“Who exactly am I talking to?” I feel ridiculous asking this question.

Rafe didn’t miss the way Laura’s body went still, her muscles stiffening where a moment before she’d been laughing with her friends. She changed the second she became aware of them. It wasn’t the greeting he would prefer. Back when they were friends, when she would see him coming, her whole body would go soft and a welcoming smile would transform her face from something professional to an intimate visage, one only meant for someone close to her. He’d taken great pride in the fact that he’d only ever seen that look on her face for one other person.

“Hello, bella.”

She frowned at him. Even with her lips turned down, she was stunning. She looked only slightly out of place in her yellow heels. The rest of her outfit was charmingly Western. She had on a full cotton skirt, a yellow tank top, and a light denim jacket. It wasn’t far off from what many of the other women were wearing, yet Laura made it seem elegant. Everything she did had an air of grace to it, even when she was bitching at him.

“I thought I asked you to stop calling me that.”

He wasn’t going to let her push him. He gave her what he hoped was an easy smile. “And I asked you to stop calling me asshole. I doubt you’ve done that. Dance with me.”

Her eyes widened, a look of horror crossing her face. “No.”

“Come on, baby. Don’t say no.” Cam crowded her, but she held her ground. Those heels were planted firmly in the grass beneath her. “I can’t dance with you until you dance with him. I lost the coin flip.”

“Oh, that’s romantic.” Her hands found her hips, and those gorgeously full lips pursed. “Every woman in the world wants to be won by the flip of a coin.”

“We didn’t have time to play cards,” Rafe admitted. He was well aware that people were listening in. Oh, they were pretending to be doing other things, but they leaned over and then talked behind their hands. The citizens of Bliss seemed to be enjoying the drama. Damn, he couldn’t get used to it. In DC, no one paid a bit of attention to what was going on around them. He tried to ignore it. “We weren’t sure how else to handle it, bella. You have to teach us.”

Her lips rose in a sarcastic grin. “See, that’s easy. Let me teach you how to handle a situation like this. You both turn around and walk out the way you came in. You get in your car and drive to Alamosa and get on a plane back to DC.”

Cam sighed. “That’s not going to happen.”

Cam ran a hand up her arm, and Rafe was satisfied with the way she shivered. She still responded to Cam. Would she respond to him? He reached out and took her hand, studying it. Her hand was small in his, her skin fair against his olive tone. Her nails weren’t as long as she used to keep them, but they were still manicured and painted a pretty pink. “Come on and dance with me. We came all this way. We’ve looked for so long. Can’t you spare a moment of your time? I promise to behave.”

He wouldn’t behave. He had every intention of reminding her of the chemistry they’d had, but he wasn’t going to announce it.

“Fine.” She pushed off of the picnic table she’d been leaning against. “One dance and that’s all.”

“With both of us,” Cam added quickly, pushing the advantage. “It’s only fair. Otherwise, we’ll both dance with you here and now.”

There it was. Rafe’s heart soared. Her eyes had flared momentarily, and it wasn’t with disgust. When they had checked into the odd motel at the edge of town, they had decided it would be best to come at her together. She’d been turned on by sex with both of them. They needed to remind her of what they had to offer.

Excerpt

Maybe it was the stress of the past two weeks or the emotional roller coaster I had been on, but somehow, I managed to fall asleep.

I peeled my eyes open at the vibration of a closing door. The last twenty-four hours came rushing toward me, and I shot straight up in…bed?

What the hell? I tried to process where I was.

The room was small, and there was a thin layer of dust covering everything. The bed and a two-drawer dresser were the only items in the room. There was a bathroom in the corner and a closet.

Call me crazy, but I thought I’d be in some basement chained to a wall, not waking up in a bedroom that smelled like—I sniffed in deep and placed the scent—pancakes.

I flipped the covers off and looked down at my clothes. Nothing had been removed but my shoes. I quietly moved around the room checking things out. I leaned down and pulled open the top drawer of the dresser to find a set of clean clothes.

Weird. They were my size.

I couldn’t help but think this was much like Savannah’s moment when she awoke in the safe house, only she was safe. I was not.

Or was I? It was a giant mind fuckery of an event.

I raced to pull on the fresh clothes and hopped on one foot to the window and tried to push it open. Two nails stuck out on the sides, keeping it locked it in place.

I tried the other in the bathroom, and it was the same. Locked.

Shadows moved under the door, alerting me I was about to have company.

I looked around for something to use as a weapon, but all I came across was a bottle of water on the dresser.

Slowly, the door handle turned, and there stood Allen in his church collar.

“Holy Lucifer,” shot from my trembling lips as I fell captive to his stare. Part of me wanted to cry. Allen was like an older version of Trigger, but just as you felt remotely comfortable, the devil would flicker across his pupils and remind you of the darkness that filled his soul.

“No, not Lucifer, but if you care to bare your soul, I’m listening, Tessa.”

“Tess,” I corrected him.

He tugged on his collar before he stepped into the room. He looked around like he was approving how nice it was.

“Look,” he bent down and sat on the arm of the chair, “I’m not in the business of kidnapping.

Never really cared for it, so most were dead by hour four.” He shrugged. “But what I do care about is taking back what’s mine.”

“Which is?” I folded my arms to hide the shakes.

“Devil’s Reach and to return the favor my son so lovingly did for me.” His head slowly rose, and a smug smile played across his dry lips.

“So, how do Gus and I fit into this?”

“Gus doesn’t. He was just being Gussy. Always had a moral probe stuck up his ass for the ones he cared about. He’s like a tick that burrows into your skin and attaches itself to your veins and never leaves unless you either cut off its head or force it from your body.”

“And me?”

His eyes widened. “You, Tessa,” he slowed my name down, “you’re my son’s weakness, my ace in this game. You,” he pointed to me, “will be mine.”

“Ha!” burst out of my mouth before I could stop it. “Not a chance. I don’t do seniors.”

He licked his lips, annoyed at my comment. “As flattered as I am you thought I would consider you, I don’t do hand-me-downs.” He brushed the arm of his jacket free from dust. “When I say mine, I actually mean…” He paused and glanced at the door. I followed his line of sight to Zay standing there in jeans and a fisherman’s knit sweater, wearing the same blank expression he always did when he was around me.

What?

“Now that we have that cleared up…” He stood, and I saw the blood on his cuff. He noticed and raised his cuff to get a better look. “Rick was a fighter.”
Nice.

“Tessa,” he purred out my name, “don’t bother running. You have no shoes, and the cornfield will slice your feet to pieces.” He smacked Zay on the shoulder as he left. “All yours.”

Not a chance.

“Hungry?” Zay asked quietly.

“No.”

“Can I get you anything?”

“A lift to town.” I dripped with sarcasm.

He gave an amused smile. “We’ll grow on you.”

“Like a tapeworm, maybe, or a tick.”

He unfolded his arms and dropped them heavily to his sides. He stepped into the room and stopped a few feet from me. “He’ll only take so much lip, Tess, and me too.”

“Good to know.” I folded my arms.

“Trigger might like it—” I slapped him across the face with my open palm. Trigger’s name was too hard to hear right now. I sucked in a sharp breath, waiting for him to react. He closed his eyes for a moment, waiting for the sting to pass.

I knew because my hand hurt like a bitch.

“I won’t sleep with you, Zay,” I muttered to fill the silence.

He stepped back and stood in the doorway. “Like I said, we’ll grow on you. Now, let’s go.”

Read an excerpt from UNLOCKING SHADOWS now:

Gwen Kendall sure as hell didn’t belong in Blyth Lake.

Shiny black hair that resembled the luminous color of a raven was flawlessly cut to frame her sculpted face. Her porcelain skin surpassed the most beautiful porcelain doll, while her full lips were smoothly covered with red lipstick that basically begged to be worn off. She also had a figure that rivaled that of any obsolete hourglass.

Gus and Noah’s abrupt manifestation by Gwen’s side was a wakeup call, and Chad had to clear his throat so that he could call out a greeting. That last thing he needed to do was act like an imbecile in front of Gwen while Noah and their father looked on.

He was a grown ass adult, but even he agreed the word ass should be emphasized considering his reaction.

One would think he’d never seen a beautiful woman before.

Chad discreetly rubbed his eyes as he leaned against the white pillar of the wraparound porch that had been painted to draw in buyers, though that time was well over a few years ago. The previous owners only had so much discretionary income to put into the house, so they had chosen mostly surface elements to polish the curb appeal, as they called it. Which was a great reminder that the external shell didn’t always represent what was on the inside. For all he knew, Gwen’s time away had stolen her shy demeanor and she was hell on heels— not that she was wearing heels out here today.

“Chad, it’s been a long time.”

He was so fucked.

Gwen smiled brightly as she looked up at him from the sidewalk, her melodic voice like honey being slowly dripped down his skin. Fortunately, she waited until she’d taken the two steps to be by his side to hold out her arm in greeting. He now had a better rein on his responses and didn’t even let on that the faint scent of vanilla enveloped him as her fingers ever so slowly closed around his.

“It’s good to see you back, Gwen.”

Chad was grateful for an excuse to release her hand, extending his arm to Gus. The older man was friends with Miles and had been for years. It was good that there didn’t seem to be any animosity between the two regarding Clay’s recent stupidity. Their families were now too connected and entwined for there to be any residual hostility… or so Chad kept telling himself that on a daily basis.

“Are you here by yourself?”

Gwen’s question threw him a bit, but he caught himself before showing his surprise. He didn’t miss Noah’s wince, though. There had apparently been a conversation about Clayton’s recent lapse in judgement, and of course, Wes and Chad were guilty just by association. It didn’t matter that their older brother made his own choices.

Gwen had clearly made up her mind about the Schaeffer men.

If that’s how she wanted to play it, then that was fine by him.

“Yes,” Chad replied, letting her know in no uncertain terms by his steel tone that he was capable of keeping this professional moving forward from this point. “I was going to be the one handling your project, for the most part. If you’d prefer someone else heading up the renovations, I’m sure Noah can make a good recommendation.”

Gwen Kendall was the prime example of how one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. He should have known better, too. Well, he got her message across loud and clear.

Chad would do them both a favor and stay far away from wherever she showed her pretty face in town.

If Kara pretends to be Cash’s fiancée and spends the weekend with him at a corporate retreat, successfully convincing the board he’s ready to settle down, he will give Kara one million dollars.

Kara can’t believe her luck. She’s spent the past year, since her father’s diagnosis, struggling to pay his bookies and medical bills. The last thing she needs is to get involved with another gambler. Especially one who runs the hottest casino in Vegas and has a reputation as bad as Cash Westbrook.

If her father’s bookies catch her with Cash, they might accuse Kara of holding out on them. If she wins the bet with Cash, she can pay her father’s debts, pack their bags, and head to Texas for an experimental treatment that may be her father’s last hope.
But she doesn’t expect to find herself falling for Cash. And when it comes to love, all bets are off.

Read the first chapter of UNLOCKING SHADOWS by Kennedy Layne before it releases on September 18th!

 About UNLOCKING SHADOWS

Coming September 18th

Gwen Kendall spent ten years in the Navy and used the last four to create a life for herself she could be proud of away from the confines of her overprotective family. Being the only woman in the Kendall clan tended to be a bit overwhelming at times.

Chad Schaeffer had been hired on to help restore an old farmhouse for one of the returning Kendall siblings. He’d heard about the trouble the family had encountered and honestly didn’t want to go anywhere near their properties. He had a change of heart when he saw the most recently returned Kendall sibling stepping out of her car with a key in her hand.

Gwen had waited a very long time to have a place to call her own, just as she had waited for the right man to share her life. One night of seduction convinces her she’s found both, but someone wants to take it all away. It’s been said that old houses retain a piece of each person who has lived there, but she never counted on the dark shadows wanting a piece of her.

Read the first chapter of UNLOCKING SHADOWS!

Twelve years ago…

Hope.

How could an individual still have such an impractical yearning after facing such a malicious, unrelenting evil?

Emma Irwin still desperately grasped at the prospect that she’d be with her family soon. She’d tell them all about the things that people took for granted, such as how much she loved them. She’d apologize to her older sister for acting so childish and to her mother for not doing the dishes like she’d promised this morning. The simplest acts of kindness weren’t hard to perform, yet she’d never realized how selfish she’d been until just this moment.

Until she’d found herself in a situation that was her father’s worst nightmare.

Emma bit back another sob as the old wooden dock underneath her back jostled her from side to side in time with the storm. The gusting winds from the gale had churned up the lake, and the choppy waves were slamming into the weathered planks. Cold rain was descending from the black sky overhead, washing away her tears as if they never existed.

When a crack of thunder overhead was followed a second later by a streak of lightning, it was a harsh reminder that she was still alive.

Emma shifted so that her bound hands didn’t dig into the small of her back quite as badly. She struggled to free herself from the thick white zip tie secured tightly around her wrists, refusing to accept that she would die at the hands of someone she’d once trusted.

How could he do this to her?

The hard, half-inch wide plastic cut into her skin, a cruel reminder that she was at his mercy.

His muttered curses were drowned out by the torrential downpour, which served her well. He wouldn’t be able to hear what she was doing behind him.

The wooden deck jarred abruptly, providing her the momentum to roll forward. Her cheek scraped against the wet, rough plank as she leveraged herself to her knees. The cold rain had numbed her skin long ago, but that could easily have been from the terror that had flooded her system when she realized that a man she’d known her entire life was a monster.

“I’ll give you a family of your own.”

Emma screamed as he suddenly appeared before her. “Please,” Emma choked out, having strained her voice after he’d all but thrown her into the bed of his truck. “Please don’t do this. You know me. You know my family. I have a family.”

“You were unhappy.”

“I wasn’t,” Emma denied emphatically with a shake of her head, swallowing back the sob that rose in her throat. “I wasn’t unhappy. I love my family. I do. I always have.”

Emma could have continued pleading, but her frantic claims would have fallen on deaf ears. She began crying uncontrollably. He wasn’t hearing anything she said, and he’d even turned away to throw what looked like a pile of chains into a boat that wasn’t even his.

Her mind registered his horrific intentions, and she instinctively managed to scramble to her feet.

She ran as fast as she could despite of her wrists being bound, ignoring the rain pelting her face and the wind attempting to knock her off the deck and into the lake. She’d just learned to swim this past summer, but she’d done so with the use of her hands. She’d most likely drown immediately without being able to move her arms.

Adrenaline kept her moving forward, though she blinked furiously to clear her vision so that she could make it to land.

There!

Up ahead.

Headlights pulled into one of the cabins that Birdie rented out to fishermen or families on vacation. She instinctively began screaming, but the rumbling thunder overhead drowned out her cries for hope.

That didn’t stop her from trying again.

Unfortunately, it was too late.

“No, no, no, no.” He’d grabbed ahold of her wet strands of hair, yanking her back against him with such force that it knocked the air right out of her lungs. She couldn’t scream, and she couldn’t even cry. “I’m taking you home.”

Emma didn’t need to be told that she would die if he got her into that boat. She fought his constricting grip around her upper body, kicking and twisting in an attempt to free herself at all costs.

It was of no use. He was too strong, and the lights she’d seen were no longer there.

The hope she’d been holding onto had been doused by the rain and swallowed by the darkness of his soul.

“I’m taking you home where you belong, Emma.”

I can’t take it anymore when I get inside, and I whip around to see his smiling face. “Leave. I don’t need your help and you’re not staying.”

“Sugar, I’ll be on you like glue. Believe me, we will get to know each other again.”

“I have a boyfriend,” I lie and watch his smile grow.

“No, you don’t.” Roman takes a step toward me and I retreat a step.

“Yes, I do,” I scoff, rolling my eyes. I could totally have a boyfriend. He wouldn’t know.

“Oh yeah? Who?” He pops an eyebrow and crosses his arms over his broad chest.

I look around at every guy in the room before I notice none of my friends are here, except one. He’s going to have to do. I march straight up to Hudson, Liam’s best friend, wrapping myself around him like an octopus and whisper in his ear, “If you don’t pretend to be my boyfriend right now, I’ll tell everyone that you cried when we watched Notebook last week.”

Hudson’s hands immediately land on my ass, dragging me farther into him, already playing along. “You wouldn’t,” he growls.

I giggle like he said something sweet and charming. “You know I would.” I can feel Roman’s eyes watching us, but I don’t give him the satisfaction of looking his way.

“I was wasted,” Hudson tries to plead his case.

“Yeah, on wine coolers.” I roll my eyes. The story just gets worse for him. Since Savannah and Liam have gotten engaged, I’ve become closer with Hudson and James. James sometimes disappears, none of us knowing where he’s gone, so Hudson has turned my way to entertain him when he’s not out hooking up with a random girl. We usually hang out in his ginormous house watching movies, but last week, he came to my apartment. I only had wine coolers and chick flicks.

Hudson tugs on my hair, bringing my face right up to his. He’s glaring at me, but I hope Roman is mistaking it for passion. “Please,” I whisper. His eyes soften after he glances over my shoulder at Roman and starts kissing along my neck.

He murmurs into my skin. “Wine coolers were all you had. How long do I have to pretend, exactly?”

“Just keep going,” I hiss. “Make it really believable.”

Hudson continues to kiss me before lifting me up and wrapping my legs around him, backing me into a wall. “It was one, single, manly tear.”

“I have a video, believe me. It wasn’t one, single, manly tear. Make that guy over there believe I’m yours or I will show everyone. Hell, I’ll make James play it on a video screen at the gym.”

Hudson grumbles, weaving his hand into my hair, pulling my face to his, our lips hovering just out of reach. A shadow falls over us right as I hear Roman’s growled words. “Sugar, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

I whip my head around to face him. “I will kiss my boyfriend if I want.”

“He’s not your boyfriend. We both know that.”

“Fuck off, man. She’s mine,” Hudson barks before kissing and nipping along my neck, trying to bring my attention back to him.

Roman ignores him, eyes still trained on me and speaks only to me. “Sugar, I’m warning you, if you don’t tell him to get your hand off your ass and out of your hair, I will his break his hands.”

Hudson whips his head up, turning toward Roman, anger swirling in his eyes. He drops me to the ground, stepping in front of me. “If you don’t back the fuck up from my girl, I’ll lay you out right here.”
