One mistake with Nate ruined her reputation, and Riley left vowing never to go anywhere near a tour – or Nate – again.

Two years later, Riley is forced back into the Ruby Riot world. A stolen car, a snowstorm, and Nate’s bloody-mindedness leave the pair stranded together. Nate and Riley cross their thin line between love and hate and discover a connection they don’t want to leave behind when the snow retreats.

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

LisaSwallow

Lisa is an Amazon bestselling author of contemporary and paranormal romance. She is originally from the UK and moved to Australia in 2001. She now lives in Perth, Western Australia with her husband, three children, and Weimaraner, Tilly, who often makes appearances on Lisa’s social media.

Lisa’s first publication was a moving poem about the rain, followed by a suspenseful story about shoes. Following these successes at nine years old there was a long gap in her writing career, until she published her first book in 2013.

In the past, Lisa worked as an English teacher in France, as an advertising copywriter in England, and ran her own business in Australia. Now she spends her days with imaginary rock stars.

She lived in Europe as a child and also travelled when she left university. This has given Lisa stories which would sound far-fetched if she wrote them down, and maybe one day she will. These days, Lisa is happy in her writing cave, under Tilly’s supervision.

EXCERPT:

RILEY

Short of time, I devour the chocolate cake, happy the coffee is half-decent. A text arrives, asking why I’m late, and I wipe my fingers before answering.
Each minute that passes, I’m putting off the inevitable.
And as I head towards the lobby, the inevitable appears.
I didn’t mean to but, unprepared, I stop in my tracks. Nate Campbell strides across the tiled floor in my direction. Dressed in dark denim and Converse, greying T-shirt stretched across his chest, he hasn’t changed. The twins are different these days; bass player Will wears his hair longer so there’s no doubt this twin with short, spiked hair is Nate.
I’m convinced Nate’s about to blank me and walk past but he stops too. His green eyes fix on mine with disinterest. I’m wrong; he has changed. His eyes are creased by tiredness, his skin paler, but this doesn’t detract from the deceptive attractiveness of his perfect features. I cannot believe I kissed that mouth; allowed those hands on my body. But there’s nothing attractive behind his lucky genetics, unless Nate’s changed on the inside too. From what I’ve heard, he hasn’t.
“Riley,” he says in greeting.
“Hello, Nate.”
“I heard you were coming. How long you staying?”
“A couple of days.”
“Not long, then.”
“Too long.”
Nate stares at my mouth, then flicks his gaze back to my eyes. His mouth tips at one corner and I hold my breath. It may be two years since, but I’ve seen that look on Nate’s face before. Amusement.
“You haven’t changed,” he says.
“Neither have you, much.”
“Yeah?”
I wave a hand at him. “You look the same.”
“That isn’t what I meant. Your attitude.” Nate crosses his arms. “But yeah, you’re skinnier and your hair’s blonder. I preferred it brown.”
I bristle at the fact he checked me out. “Your attitude remains the same too, then.”
I swore I’d avoid this, but already the animosity slips in.
“Still get your knickers in a twist over everything?”
“What?”
“Just a question. I heard you lost your shit with Melissa a couple of hours ago.” He smirks. “Smiley Riley’s back in town.”
“Jesus, Nate. Two minutes and you’ve already started this. Don’t you think we should forget what happened and be professional?”
Two years.
Two years to say the words that needed saying back then. How we should’ve left things. Professional.
“About what happened? You still dwelling on that?” Nate shakes his head. “Ancient history, Riley.”
“Okay.” I put my phone in my bag. “Call this the line in the sand. I’ll ignore what happened in the past if you do. A couple of days here and I’m gone, and we don’t have to see each other again. We can be civil for that long.”
Nate rubs his index finger along his lips, staring at my mouth again. “How about we just keep out of each other’s way?”
“Sounds like a great idea.”
“If you can, of course.”
I laugh, a short derisive sound. “Seriously?”
Nate steps closer and that tiny change in proximity floods back the frustrating physical effect the man I hate has on me. I tuck my hands beneath my arms, goose bumps rising along my neck. Has the absence made this worse? Sometimes I have stupid dreams about Nate that involve far too much intimacy and wake up disgusted with myself. Why the hell can’t I control my subconscious?
Nate raises a hand to my face and I’m too stunned to react before he touches the corner of my mouth. “Riley,” he whispers, moving his face closer to mine. “There’s something you need to know.”
I blink as the sensation of his fingertip sends a tiny shock across my mouth and I part my lips. “What?”
Instead of darkened eyes to match my thumping heart, the amusement remains on his face. Nate holds his index finger up. “You have chocolate around your mouth.”
I step back and narrow my eyes at him.
He grins and wipes his hand on his jeans. “Gotcha.”
“Asshole!”
“You’re not over me, are you?”
Before I get a chance to tell Nate exactly what I think of him, he moves past me. “Two years, Riley!” Nate calls as he walks away. “Get a grip!”
I glance around, relieved nobody saw our encounter, then rush to the nearest ladies’ room. Fury is replaced by horror. Chocolate is smeared around the edges of my mouth, in a way any five-year-old would be proud of. My professional image ruined by a slice of bloody cake. With shaking hands, I wipe the mess away with a paper towel.
Damn you, Nate Campbell.

BLURB:

Drummer Nate Campbell is a ‘Ruby Riot twin’ – and that’s all he wants anybody to know. The only person allowed close is his brother, Will, and even that’s not working out these days. For Nate, girls are a dispensable distraction and the rock star life suits his needs. Nobody will expect him to hand his heart over if he pretends he doesn’t have a one.

Falling for Nate Campbell was the second biggest mistake of Riley Sawyer’s life. Working as a junior PR girl on the Blue Phoenix European and Ruby Riot tour, she earned a reputation as unapproachable and unable to switch off from work. With a side to her life Riley keeps hidden, she was happy to maintain her distance. But after an encounter with Nate, and several difficult weeks, Riley left the circuit and vowed never to tour with bands again.

Two years later Riley achieves her ambition and is a PR manager and Ruby Riot are headlining stadiums. She meets Nate again for the first time in two years and nothing has changed. The animosity stands and so does the attraction. Neither sees this as a problem because they can avoid each other for the two days until Riley leaves.

What they don’t count on is that Nate’s bloody-mindedness and an unfortunate set of circumstances leads to the pair snowed-in at a pub on the Yorkshire Moors for several days. Forced to spend time together, Riley and Nate are pushed into discussing what happened on tour and find themselves in a situation neither of them expected.

When the snow retreats and they return to London, Nate discovers Riley has her own secret and it’s one deeply connected to his past. Nate backs away, unsure if he can continue a relationship with the girl who’s more like himself than he realised.

Nate won’t have long to decide because Riley isn’t prepared to let a damaged commitmentphobe into her life. And she has zero interest in fixing a man who refuses to fix himself.

CHAPTER REVEAL – SHUFFLE

WILL

Touring with Blue Phoenix fooled us into thinking we’d hit the big time and would never return to our ordinary lives again. Yeah, Ruby Riot dominates our corner of the music scene, we’re bombarded with questions and posts on social media, fan mail, and the whole deal. But, at the end of the day, we’re three guys and a girl in a band.
The band’s progress halted and life rewound when our lead singer, Ruby, danced off into the sunset with the Blue Phoenix guitarist and a baby on the way. Jax lost his shit over Ruby getting knocked up by Jem; but what’s the point in freaking out? She’ll come back; Ruby lives and breathes her music more than any of us. Apart from Jax, who was recently caught in feminine wiles of his own. Tegan, Bryn Hughes sister, kicked his backside into line in a spectacular fashion. I can almost see the thumbprint on his forehead. Things lulled as we finished the album and while Ruby has her baby. Then, we try again.
So, me and Nate rewind several months, back to studying and fulfilling our promise to parents. Mine still think we need a back-up plan for when our little musical venture fails. If they’d bothered to pay attention to our lives over the last few months, Mum and Dad would know this isn’t likely to happen any time soon.
We spent all our money from the tour within weeks. Now the choice is a job, which equals less time and energy to rehearse, or doing what the parents want and dutifully completing our degrees. No big deal, only a year left now.
Okay, big deal because I fucked up last year. I need high marks in all my courses this year or I’m going to fail my degree. An Arts degree. Nobody fails an Arts degree.
Living the rock star dream involved more than the odd weekend gig –  rehearsals, obligatory partying, and girls. Hangovers equal missed lectures; but somehow, Nate juggled his student/rock star life as adeptly as his drumsticks. Nate studies the same course as I do, but we choose different class times. As only a handful of people in the world can tell us apart, between us we manage to attend at least one of the classes a week and keep our attendance average.
Nate became slack at note-taking last year, his hungover haze interfering with the ability to open his laptop, but somehow he muddled through and passed. I came a tiny percentage away from failing the majority of courses.
I only have myself to blame.
The worst subject is history. Nate talked me into this as our major, and I agreed, thought it would be easy, but no. Hardly any classes to attend, but so much fucking study. We study English lit too; that’s easier to scrape through by reading notes and creating my own crazy theories. History is bloody complicated.
Two weeks in, and things are off to a bad start.
“Shit!” I throw my paper at Nate, across the table in the cafe.
He looks at the assignment-marking sheet on the front and screws his nose up. “Oh, man. Fifteen percent? Was that for getting your name right?”
“I’m fucked!” I grumble and sit next to him. “What about you?”
“Sixty-three percent.”
“How? How do you do that?”
“Study?”
“I do study!”
“Study more.”
I swear under my breath and pull out my phone. A text from Dee, the chick I hooked up with at the beginning of term; a starry-eyed Fresher who won’t take the hint I’m not interested. Times like this, I need to remind myself who I am. Will Campbell, bass player for Ruby Riot heading for the big time. Not Will Campbell, failing Arts student trying to keep his parents happy.
“What the fuck do I do? I tried this time! Really tried. I’m shit at history.”
“Man, if coming back to uni sucks this much, find a job instead.”
No way. As long as I’m here, I have cash flow from my parents. I promised that when Ruby Riot started making more money, I’d pay them back a thousand times over. Behind their smiles of agreement, I see what they really think: never going to happen.
“I can’t. I’m not doing some shitty job at a supermarket while I wait for Ruby to come back to the band.”
“Well, suck it up, princess. Keeps Mum and Dad off our backs if we get a ‘proper’ qualification.”
“When do you think they’ll believe we can make a living from the band?”
“When we actually do. The album launches next month, we have a few small gigs lined up. A bit of cash. Ruby’s coming.”
“With her kid?”
“Dunno. Maybe baby-daddy Jem will come and babysit.”
I laugh; we both do, at the image of Jem Jones – bad-mouthed, bad attitude, reformed addict –  with a baby as his new accessory. “I’d pay to see that. Reckon he changes nappies?”
Nate screws his face up. “Dude, I’m eating.”
I steal one of his chips and watch the other students around. Most pay little attention to us, although we have hangers-on some days. Their belief we’re partying rock stars draws them to us, and the partying is one of the reason for my bad grades.
Nate slurps from his can of energy drink. “There’s a study group if you’re that worried.”
I stare. “Study group? Are you mad? I suppose that’s a group of chicks who meet in the evenings in the library and argue about feminist interpretations of history. Like the one in my class, can’t remember her name. Jeez, she doesn’t shut up and the guy teaching the class hardly gets a word in. No wonder I’m not learning anything.”
“Just a suggestion.” He pushes my paper across the table. “Fail this semester and you’ll be stacking supermarket shelves.”
“As if! What about the album? We’re gonna be big.”
“There’s no guarantee, you know that.” Nate stands. “Whose turn is it to go to the Shakespeare class this afternoon? Yours?”
“Oh crap, no, please don’t make me sit through that again. I bloody hate Shakespeare.” I stand too.
“Your name sake? No affinity there? What did you expect when you signed up for Lit as part of your degree?”
“Please,” I beg. “Do this. After that shit mark, I’m not in the mood.”
Nate wrinkles his nose at my pleading look. “Fine, but you do the next two classes.”
“I love you, man.” I grab the side of his face and kiss his cheek hard.
Nate pushes me off. “Jesus, Will!”
He hauls his messenger bag across his shoulders and wanders away. Slumping back in my seat, I chew my lip. Study group sounds like a viable option. Unfortunately.

****

FLEUR

I flick the switch in the library study room and the strip light illuminates the screwed up paper and abandoned pens from the last occupants. Muttering, I grab the bin and dump everything in. Some moron has spilled a sticky drink on one of the wooden chairs and I pull it away from the table. Four chairs are enough for the group.
A select handful of history student friends and I meet here once a week to combine our research and share ideas. We’re aiming to go onto post-grad study, and our co-operation makes sense. We’re in this together, not competing.
Some of the group failed the last paper and even I dropped below eighty percent, which hasn’t happened since my first year. Our understanding of late twentieth century European history needs work and we’ve decided that’s where we’ll focus tonight. Dragging my textbook from the bag and dumping it on the desk, I sit. Laptop open, pen out, and I’m ready.
Nita arrives first; her thick black hair pulled into a ponytail and a worried expression on her face. I’m surprised when Steph enters the room; we had a huge argument in the last session, and we haven’t spoken since. Steph doesn’t like to be wrong; neither do I, so we have issues. Her mark must’ve been really bad if she came back. The fourth member of our happy gang, Sam, wanders in after we’ve started, as usual.
“How’d everybody go with the paper?” I ask.
A variety of displeased grunts is my answer.
“Bombed. What about you?” asks Sam.
“I passed.”
Nita glances at Sam. “Told you she would.”
Steph mutters, “We failed.”
“Well, the next one we’ll all pass,” I say attempting to inject some enthusiasm into the room. “Did everybody bring their textbooks?”
“Yes, Miss,” says Sam with a chuckle.
They can tease all they like, but I’m serious about my ambitions. Since I was a kid, my life revolved around books. Learning. Understanding. When I start my PhD, I’ll teach first year classes part-time too. I admit I’m practicing on my trio of study friends.
“The website links they gave us for research were crap,” says Sam. “I ended up going in circles and more confused.”
“Maybe we’ll map out the best ones today?” I suggest. “Some must be easier to navigate.” I pull up the bookmarks on my laptop.
The door opens and I glance up, annoyed at the interruption. A tall guy stands in the doorway. If it wasn’t obvious who he is, the Ruby Riot t-shirt stretched across his muscled chest is a giveaway. A half-smile plays across his mouth, one I remember from a couple of weeks ago. He pushes long fingers through his dark, spiked fringe as he looks over.
Nate Campbell. Or Will.
Whoever he is, this is one of the big-headed rock star twins. I don’t care which, because after Will’s behaviour at the party whoever he is can get the hell out. I wait for him to close the door and walk away. He doesn’t.
“Yes?” I ask.
“This the history group?”
“Correct.”
“Cool.” He drags a spare chair from the corner of the room to the table.
“What are you doing?”
“Joining your group. To study.” Without waiting for an invitation, he sits and folds his tattooed arms on the desk. “That okay?”
“Depends. Which twin are you? Will or Nate?”
The guy studies me, and I return his scrutiny, looking for a sign of guilt or embarrassment over his treatment of me at the party. If there’s any chance at all that this is Will, he can bloody leave.
“Which one do you want me to be?”
I scowl at him. “I think you know which one I don’t want you to be. You were both there.” There’s no sign on his face of guilt, either this is Nate or Will’s too arrogant to care.
The guy ignores the response. “Is it because I have to ask nicely?” He clears his throat. “Please may I join your study group?”
Nita giggles and I glance at her. Great, she’s wide-eyed and silly because a Campbell is in the room with us. Steph looks less impressed, but Sam joins Nita in his interest.
“Why are you back at uni, man? Thought you guys made it big.”
Possibly-Nate-maybe-Will shrugs. “Want to finish my degree. Back-up plan and all that.”
“And you want to join us?” I ask, not wanting to waste time on his life story.
“Is that a problem?” asks Nita.
“I suppose not.”
“Welcome,” says Sam.
I glower at Sam; but despite my delusions, I’m not in charge here.

****
WILL

Shit.
Is Fleur the leader of the group? Or does she just set herself up to be? If I tell her I’m Will, she’ll kick my ass straight out of here. Without replying which of the twins I am, I pull out my laptop. If this group is worth the time, I’ll figure out how to talk Fleur around. She introduces me to the rest of the group then returns to her laptop.
After the party, Nate questioned my drunken decision to hit on Fleur, and I shrugged him off, told him I wasn’t serious and just teasing. Truth is, I was serious, and I wasn’t teasing. Yeah, totally screwed up my chances now, but I have a thing for Fleur. I’m not sure how to define the ‘thing’. Fleur isn’t my type of girl. I prefer an edgy look. Ever since I saw her in a lecture two years ago, blonde hair falling across her face as she squeezed past me to take a seat nearby with her friend, I’ve fantasised about her. Okay, truth is when I stood to let her pass, her ass brushed against me, and that was the trigger for my fantasies. And my dick.
For a few weeks afterwards, I looked for an opportunity to talk to her; but hundreds attend my history lectures, and we were never assigned the same seminars. Fleur never noticed me, or if she did, never wanted to talk to me. I’ve seen her at parties in the past, but usually with a guy.
By the second year, I decided her lack of attention was what kept my crush going.
This year, she’s in a couple of Nate’s classes; and on the occasions I’ve taken them for him, she hasn’t spoken to or looked at me. Nate has nothing to apologise for, but she’s sour faced with me-him too. I guess we’re both on her shit list. Maybe something to do with the picture of me and her appearing on Instagram with a comment about how cute she is. The image was only up a few hours before I sobered up and took it down. Good thing I’m not as interesting as Jax, when he posted a picture of him and Tegan the world went bat-shit crazy.
Still, Fleur does weird things to me without trying, and I’d kill to get my hands on her. Chances of that happening now have moved from slim to none.
I shake out of my thoughts, aware I’m glazing over. Already, I’m lost and crane my neck to look at Nita’s laptop. “What are we doing?” I whisper.
“Checking out H-Net site.”
“Oh. What’s that?”
“Research site. Don’t you have the link?” she whispers back.
“Are you okay?” asks Fleur.
“I can’t find the site,” I reply.
“The one we signed up to at the beginning of last year?”
Crap. “I haven’t signed up yet.”
Fleur looks at me as if I’m from another planet. “Are you seriously telling me you’ve never once used this site? The key site? Did you actually pass anything?”
“Not much. I guess that’s one answer to why I failed most of last year.”
“Sign up now, then.”
“Don’t have passwords.”
“Well, I guess there’s no point you being here.”
I hold Fleur’s pissed off gaze, amused by her haughty attitude. “It’s okay. I’ll watch and learn.” I shift closer to Nita whose friendly smile indicates my semi-star status helps me out. “You can email me some details later, can’t you?” I ask Nita.
“Sure!”
The next hour dizzies me. I have screwed up my studies, big style. I need to go back to history assignment writing 101. Why did I slack off mid-last year when the excitement of rising fame hit? Swept up in the moment, I convinced myself I’d hit the big time and I wouldn’t need to bother anymore.
Dumbass.
Fleur knows her shit. Everybody here does. If I hang with them, maybe some of their smarts will rub off on me. As they pack away their laptops and books, I overhear Nita chat to Fleur about some one-on-one help. Right. Fleur’s the smartest. Could I persuade her to give me some extra help too?
Not if she knows I’m Will.
My options are limited and one thing I’ve learned over the last hour is I need to be in this group. The days of achieving a decent grade on my own are gone. Yeah, I could put extra effort in alone, but I don’t want to spend half my life trawling the internet for answers. These guys know a shitload more than I do, and are willing to share.
“Am I allowed back?” I ask Fleur as Nita leaves.
“You never said who you were.”
Her big blue eyes delve into my conscience and, for a split second, I consider telling the truth. The problem is my conscience hasn’t played any part in my life recently.
“I’m Nate,” I say and hold out my hand.
Fleur looks at my hand but doesn’t take hold. “Your brother’s an arsehole.”
“Sometimes. But that doesn’t mean I am, right?”
Her straight blonde hair falls into her face as she bends over to fasten her bag. “Depends. You both have a reputation.”
“I promise I’ll behave,” I say and attempt to sound sincere.
Fleur continues to pack her things and doesn’t reply. Ah, well, it was worth a shot.
“If you think the group can help you, and if you leave the Campbell attitude outside the door, then okay.”
Score. “Easy done.”
Could she look anymore doubtful? “We’ll be here same time next week, 6 p.m., if you want to come back.”
“Thanks,” I say as she walks to the door.
Fleur pauses. “You’re welcome, but I suggest you do some study between now and then.”
“Let me buy you a coffee, say thanks properly?”
“I’m busy, but thanks for the offer.”
“Another time?”
“Let’s leave it at this, Nate,” she says and before I can respond, she leaves.
The realisation hits as the door clicks closed and my brain re-engages. I told her I was Nate.
Nate’s gonna lose his shit.

Chapter One

LISBON, PORTUGAL

TEGAN

Bryn forgets that I travelled across Asia on my own, and chooses to ignore the lesson he learned when we were growing up: my big brother doesn’t tell me what to do. In fact, anybody who tries will discover the slender girl who looks younger than her twenty years, and gets far more attention from men than she’d like, isn’t a delicate pushover but a force of nature they can’t control.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not rude – unless you’re rude to me – I just know what I want and aim high. ‘No’ isn’t an answer; it’s a challenge.
Which is why my sour-faced brother is standing in the doorway of his hotel room, arms crossed. My big brother, the rock star, in his uniform of scruffy t-shirt and black jeans, a canvas of ink covering his muscled arms. Unimpressed deep-brown eyes regard me from beneath his curled fringe. This is the mountain-sized guy people at school were scared of, but they never knew he’d go home and have tea parties with his kid sister and her dolls.
Seven years older than me, Bryn left town when I was ten, launched into the stratosphere with Blue Phoenix. On the day he left, Bryn promised my teary, snotty-faced self that one day I could join him and tour with the band.
Guess what day it is today?
“What the actual fuck, Tegan?” growls Bryn. “Where did you come from?”
I flash him a smile. “London.”
“Yeah, I know where you live, but why the hell are you here?” His heavy brow tugs lower.
“Because this is where the taxi brought me from the airport,” I say breezily. “Nice that you’re kicking the tour off in Portugal, I haven’t seen much of Europe yet.”
Bryn composes himself, steps back, and opens the door wider. “Get in here.”
“Sure! Grab my bag then.” I indicate my well-travelled rucksack, tiptoe to plant a kiss on his stubbled cheek, and head inside the air-conditioned room.
A muttering Bryn follows me into his suite. My last travels involved backpacker hostels: bunk beds in shoebox-sized rooms and grotty, shared bathroom facilities of a basic nature. Bryn’s accommodation is a hotel suite the size of the small flat I share with Phoebe. Well, technically I crashed on her sofa several weeks ago and haven’t moved on.
I perch on the blue couch, sinking into the plush cushions and continue to smile sweetly as Bryn half-throws my rucksack across the room.
“So, you forgot to buy my plane ticket and book my room, didn’t you?” I ask.
“I told you it wasn’t a good idea for you to tour with us.”
“Yeah, but you never gave a reason.”
“Apart from I don’t want my baby sister on a Blue Phoenix tour!”
“Don’t be ridiculous, I’m not a kid.” I shift and remove my phone from the back pocket of my jeans and check for messages. “Plus, you guys are tame these days.”
Bryn continues to hover by the closed door. “Yeah we are, but there’s plenty around who aren’t. Some of the tour crew don’t do this for the pay; they do it for the perks.”
I screw my nose up. “I haven’t come here to be the perks. I’ll pull my weight. Give me something to do to help out with the tour, and I’ll do it.”
“Like what, Tegan?”
“I don’t know… anything. Find me something Blue Phoenix needs help with, or ask if Ruby Riot needs a bodyguard. Lots of girls want their hands on Jax. Dylan had better watch his king of the rock stars crown.”
Dylan, the lead singer of Blue Phoenix and the man who topped numerous ‘World’s Sexiest men’ lists over the past few years recently married. Now the world’s scrutiny has shifted elsewhere – to the Ruby Riot guitarist, Jax Lewis.
“What?” Bryn misses my teasing tone. “Jax? You want to get close to Ruby Riot, don’t you?”
Seriously? Seven years a rock star and Bryn thinks everything is about sex.
“I was joking! Do I look like I could hold a horde of salivating girls off the pretty-boy rock star?”
Bryn continues to regard me with suspicion and I sigh. “Is there anything to drink?” I ask, and before he can give his indignant response, I add, “Water. I’m tired after the trip. I’m not a big drinker.”
“That’s one good thing…” Bryn disappears and returns with a litre bottle of water, which he throws at me and I deftly catch.
“I’m not interested in who you all are, I just want the experience of doing this. I’ll stick to the background, okay?”
Bryn chews a nail and studies me. “No. I don’t like you around this scene.”
“I promise I won’t tell Mum what naughty things you get up to.”
“Very funny, Tegan. Listen, we’ve mellowed, but this isn’t the environment for a girl.”
My mouth falls open; Bryn doesn’t usually talk down to women. “I’d like to hear you say that to Ruby Riot’s lead singer! She’d have your balls for that.”
“Ruby’s different.”
“Why? She’s not much older than me!”
“Lots of reasons. Tegan, you can’t tour with us.”
“I’m here, aren’t I? Tough.” I put my feet on the nearby low table and drink the water, waiting for Bryn’s next move.
“Jesus!” Bryn drags his phone from his pocket and hits the screen. Watching me with a tired look, he barks at the unfortunate person who answers. “Who’s tour managing? I need their help.”
Bryn walks into the nearby bedroom, continuing his conversation and I shuffle down into the cushions. Best he sorts this soon. I yawn, ignoring my growling stomach and fight against posting a Twitter update about my arrival.
A couple of minutes later, Bryn reappears, crosses toward me, and grabs my arm. “Right. You. Downstairs.”
I drag my arm away. “I’m not leaving!”
“Yeah, not tonight. Come on.” He pulls open the door and heads out.
“Or tomorrow!” I call after him as I follow. The heavy door slams shut behind me. “You promised!”
My voice echoes along the quiet corridor as Bryn strides along the carpeted floor to the elevators.
As I reach him, the elevator door slides open and we step into the confined space. “Does Mum know you came here?” he asks.
“Kind of.”
“Kind of?”
The doors close and I rest against the wall as Bryn hits the button. “I told Mum I was travelling again. She’s cool with what I do as long as I’m back for uni in September.” I pause. “You should take a leaf out of her book and notice that I’ve grown up.”
“I’d noticed,” says Bryn as the elevator moves down, lurching my stomach. “And that is the problem.”

****

Bryn ushers me to a quiet cafe area close to the lobby, the space filled with empty metal tables surrounded by high-backed upholstered chairs. I sit and pull some cash from my back pocket then grab a menu. “I’m starving.”
“I’ll buy you something. What do you want?”
“No, it’s okay. I can pay my own way.” I offer a Euro note. “Just a sandwich. Any kind is fine.”
He ignores the money and heads off, returning a few moments later with Turkish bread wrapped in paper and a china cup of coffee.
“Thanks, Bryn.”
He sighs. “No problem. I’ll sort you a room once Tina comes down here to do whatever she needs to.”
“Cool, thanks.” I unwrap the sandwich and take a huge bite, savouring the freshness of the cheese and ham. The meal on the plane over here wasn’t enough to fill a child.
I watch him leave, grateful he’s not expecting me to sleep on his sofa, and pull out my phone to post the update I’ve itched to. Since I mentioned – all right, announced – that I was in the privileged position of spending six weeks on tour with Blue Phoenix and Ruby Riot, my daily blog hits have quadrupled. Not to mention my Instagram and Twitter followers. My travel blog suddenly became a whole lot more interesting since I replaced pictures of Thai beaches with rock stars.
After posting a quick update, I sip my latte, deciding these surroundings are definitely better than my friend’s floor in London.
Bryn returns and thrusts a keycard at me. “Room. Go. I’ll bring your bag in a few. I need to sort something out.”
“It had better not been a plane ticket home,” I retort.
Bryn scowls again. What the hell is he behaving like this for? For the last four years, I’ve spoken to him about this; and after three years of nagging, he said when I was eighteen I could come on tour. Blue Phoenix didn’t tour the year I turned eighteen; then the tour last year was cut short amongst all the Blue Phoenix dramas, so I headed overseas while I waited, embarking on a mini-tour of my own. Bryn evidently thought I’d continue to do my own thing and forget about the tour. Wrong. Who’d miss a chance of touring with the world’s biggest rock band?
Blowing Bryn a kiss, which he responds to with a shake of his head, I walk back to the elevator. When I check the number on the keycard, I groan. The same floor as Bryn. I bet he’s booked me in next to him so he can make sure I’m not ravished by the roadies.
I giggle at the image of Bryn following me around and protecting my honour. He probably still thinks I’m a virgin. Right, how many twenty-year-old virgins has he come across in the last few years? Not many, I’ll bet. Not that I’m Miss Sexually Liberated, I had a serious boyfriend at school, and since him, one other guy. Both times the relationship was loving and exclusive, but our lives went in different directions. The backpacking culture saw a lot of bed hopping but that’s not for me.
I step back into the quiet corridor of Bryn’s floor. The setting sun shines through the floor to ceiling window at the opposite end of the long hallway, filtering light across the carpet and creating dazzling rays. From this height, I’ll have an awesome view of the city to add to my collection.
“Hey!”
I look over my shoulder at the owner of the voice. My eyes take a moment to focus after staring at the sunlight, until I see a blond guy striding down the hallway. From his swagger, I don’t have to wait for him to approach before I realise who this is.
The guy halts short of me and eyes the colour of sapphire switch from anger to interest as he checks me out. I arch a ‘yeah?’ eyebrow at him and take in the face and physique of the unmistakable Jax Lewis.
This guy’s on the edge between man and boy, his tall frame filled out with hard muscles beneath the t-shirt – I’ve seen the pictures – but he still holds the wiry frame of a teen. The effect he’s having on me is one hundred percent man though, my insides don’t normally disintegrate into molten heat when I look at a guy.
Jax’s blond fringe dips into his eyes as he rubs a finger along his full lips. Is he as lost at what to say to me as I am to him? Surely not. Guys as hot as this are never lost for words. Oh yeah, h-o-t and he knows it because he soon switches to a slow, seductive smile. I’m too busy checking out the way his jeans fit his long legs and picturing myself running my nails across his firm abs to respond to that.
Sorry, big brother but this is going to be tricky.
“How did you find your way up here?” he asks with his oh-so-English accent that melts the hearts and panties of American fans.
“The elevator. I decided the stairs would take too long.”
“You know what I mean! How did you know we were staying here?”
His eyes distract me, a captivating, intense blue, and I return his scrutiny despite the unwanted pulse hike he’s causing.
“Who’s we? You’re not Blue Phoenix.”
“No. Clearly. Is that who you’re looking for? You don’t look like a Phoenix groupie.”
I choke a laugh. “Oh? What do I look like?”
“I have a number of responses to that,” he says in a low voice.
“Yeah, I bet you have a list somewhere.”
Jax grazes his teeth against his lip as he looks at mine. “They always work on girls who know who I am.”
I laugh. Loudly. Judging by his surprised look, he wasn’t expecting my reaction. “Because you’re Jax Lewis? Hey, I’ve met bigger stars than you.”
“Oh. Right, professional groupie then?” He drops his friendliness and stares at my tits instead.
“Not really, so don’t get any ideas.”
“Why hang around on the floor of the hotel two big rock bands are staying in then?”
“Two big rock bands?” I snigger. “One and a half. Don’t get ahead of yourself, now.”
I bite my lip against saying more; I’ve poked a sore spot because his stance stiffens.
“Fine. I suggest you leave before I call security.”
“Mm-hmm.” I check the numbered sign on the wall, locating the direction I need to walk to reach my room. As I head off, Jax appears next to me.
“Where are you going?”
“My room.” I wave the keycard at him.
“Hang on. Are you with the PR team? I haven’t met you, I don’t recognise you.”
“And you always remember a pretty face, huh?”
“If I’d seen you before, I’d remember. Seriously.” He flashes a smile that does nothing to soothe the attraction to him I’m trying to quell, all sensual mouth and sharpening cheekbones. Damn. Something like this was not on my agenda. Something like him.
“Maybe you’ll recognise me next time we meet,” I reply and swipe my keycard.
“You’re with the tour people? You’re not a groupie?”
“Not exactly and no.”
“Who are you then?”
Opening the room door with my shoulder, I point down the hallway to where Bryn has appeared from the elevator. “Ask him.”

****

JAX

The heavy door slams shut behind the girl and I stare as the smooth wood almost hits my face. Weird. I definitely haven’t seen this chick around since the tour entourage arrived yesterday and, as I have a thing for long hair, long legs, and a cute ass like hers, I’d remember this girl.
Bryn heads along the corridor toward me. “Hey, man” he says gruffly as he passes.
“Who’s the chick?”
Bryn halts and spins around. “Which chick? Where?”
“You didn’t see her? Jeez, man, you’d know if you had. Brown-haired girl, long legs, killer body.” Bryn’s brow tugs down and I continue, “I reckon I might be in with a chance, man, she gave me the look.”
“‘The look’?”
“You know, when it’s obvious in a chick’s eyes she wants you naked.”
Bryn’s face hardens further by the moment, and I stop unsure why I’m getting a death stare. Jesus, if Bryn’s stressed like this before the tour kicks off properly, what the hell will he be like on a shit day?
“Did she tell you her name?” he asks.
“Never had the chance, she walked away all coy and mysterious. The girl said you might know who she is.”
“Right. Long brown hair, you said. Tall?”
“Yeah. And beautiful. Like a model.”
Bryn gives a short bark of a laugh. “Don’t get too carried away. She’s attractive, but I wouldn’t go that far. Or is that a line you use on girls, Jax?”
My dumb brain finally switches into gear. “You know her.”
“Oh, yeah, I know her.”
Shit. I thought the girl meant Bryn knew who she was, not this. She’s Bryn’s chick. Why else would his tone harden and look darken? Oh, shit. The girl I’ve seen him with recently must’ve been traded in for a newer model. Nice one, Jax.
“Crap. Sorry, man. Didn’t realise. I’ll back off and she probably wasn’t looking at me like that…” I hold my hands up in apology; telling one of Blue Phoenix I’m intending to hit on his girl is not a great start to the tour. Bryn’s an easy-going guy, but his tense demeanour suggests there’s another side close to the surface. A side I haven’t seen and don’t want to meet.
“Yeah, I suggest you keep your hands off,” he says, voice low and loaded with warning.
“I didn’t realise,” I repeat. “I’m sorry, honest.” Perspiration builds across my back as I wait for his response.
Bryn glances along the hallway. “Where did she go?”
“In there.” I indicate the door.
“Right.” Bryn strides away but passes the room the girl went into.
I continue to the elevator in a daze; the journey from my room to the bar took a very different turn to the one I expected when I walked into the hallway five minutes ago.
If the chick is with Bryn, she’s bad news because I didn’t imagine her reaction to me. I may not have the same experience with women as the Blue Phoenix guys; but I know enough and that was an unmistakable and barely hidden connection. Bryn’s wrong. She’s beautiful but in a larger than life, confident way that’s sexy as hell in a girl. I’d lay bets she knows what she wants and how to get it. Until the conversation with Bryn, I’d swear that was me.
Why do Blue Phoenix always take the girls I want?

BLURB:

Tegan Hughes joins Blue Phoenix and Ruby Riot on tour, and drummer Bryn isn’t the only one who notices his little sister isn’t a kid anymore.

Jax Lewis is the guitarist for Ruby Riot and the band are rising to success. He’s hot property and loving every minute of his new found fame. Now, he’s on tour supporting Blue Phoenix and living his rock star life to the full. Until Tegan walks into his world and puts the brakes on.

Tegan Hughes is taking a year out and has her sights set on touring Europe with her big brother’s band. Blue Phoenix drummer, Bryn isn’t happy when his sister arrives unannounced at his hotel in Lisbon, but Tegan isn’t the type of person to take no as an answer.

With her big brother breathing down their necks, Jax and Tegan attempt to keep a handle on their growing attraction but that proves harder than they thought. Jax is used to getting whoever and whatever he wants and after kissing Tegan once, he knows one thing…he wants more.

The problem is, Tegan isn’t rock star girlfriend material. She has ambitions of her own and refuses to let anything stand in the way of her plans. But when Jax and Tegan’s relationship becomes public knowledge life becomes a hell of a lot more complicated.

Cadence is the first standalone book in a new rock romance series, Ruby Riot. The series is a spin-off from the Blue Phoenix books but you do not need to read the Blue Phoenix series first.

EXCERPT:

“Tegan!”
I stop at the sound of Jax’s voice and turn as he approaches. His face shines, and the salty scent of his damp skin digs further into the primal part of me aroused by this guy. We’re nowhere near as close as in the elevator earlier, but my nerve-endings tingle as if we were touching. Jax wipes his damp hair from his face and turns the smile to me he’s used many times before. This time it works, ramping up my heartbeat.
“Thanks for watching us,” he says.
“You were good.”
He grins. “I know.”
“Conceited!”
“Yeah, but it’s true. If I don’t believe in myself and the band to that degree, we won’t be as good as we are.”
“Now I believe what you’ve been telling me. You certainly are a rock star, Jaxon.”
He purses his lips. “Jaxon isn’t a rock star, Jax is.”
“Who’s Jaxon then?”
“A wannabe kid who’s not around any more.”
“I think I’d like him.”
Jax tugs his bottom lip between his teeth and looks at my mouth. “Do you like me, Tegan Hughes?”
A couple of guys head down the hallway towards us, talking into radios and I move to one side. Jax matches, blocking my way. Instead, I rest against the wall and put my feet out so he can’t move closer. Any nearer and I won’t be responsible for my actions.
“Big party tonight, huh?” I ask.
“Yeah. You didn’t answer my question.” His sapphire blue eyes search mine and I concentrate on hiding the reaction I’m having to him. I can’t blame my pink cheeks and breathlessness on dancing to Ruby Riot anymore.
“Do I get an invite?” I ask.
“To me or the party?”
I give a small smile. “The party. Why? What are you inviting me to do?”
“Anything you want.” His voice is low and despite my attempt at distance, his face is close to mine. Yesterday, I’d have scorned him for a comment like that, rolled my eyes at his moves but in a short space of time he flipped my brain to standby.
I don’t know how long we stand with faces centimetres apart, challenging each other to be the first to make a move in this power play. Each second that passes with Jax’s warm breath touching my mouth, darkened eyes holding me in place, and I’m a step closer to surrender. I moisten my lips, body buzzing with a need I don’t want.
“Five minutes!” yells a voice and I twist my head away, breaking the invisible thread pulling me to him.
The stage manager glances at us as he passes.
Jax touches my lip with his rough thumb and I jerk, caught off-guard. “I think you answered my question.” He steps back.
I dig my hands into the back pockets of my jeans in case he sees them shaking. “Don’t be so sure of yourself.”
The intensity in his eyes doesn’t drop and I match his look. Jax may have enchanted me with his brand of rock star, but I won’t make this easy for him. As soon as I walk away from the heated evening, I’ll regain some of my senses. Hopefully.
“This morning, in the elevator, I forgot to tell you something,” he says.
“What?”
“Don’t play games with me, Tegan, because you’ll lose.”
Before I have a chance to respond, Jax moves away and I watch his swagger as he heads back to the noisy dressing room.
Oh, yeah? Game on.
