My heart is racing, and my breathing is shallow now that we’re face to face. He’s still angry, nothing but hate and sadness reflecting in his eyes. It’s then looking at him, seeing those emotions swirl that I realize I’m not mad at him. I don’t hate him for doing this.

I couldn’t, not even if I wanted to. Instead, I feel something entirely different…I feel remorse. I feel sorry that this is what he has turned into, sorry that there is no love in his life, that he’s lost the light, the kindness he once had.

Feeling a need to bring back that man, I grasp onto his shirt, grabbing a handful of the fabric, pulling him even closer while lifting up my head from the mattress. I don’t think. I simply press my lips to his and kiss him. His lips are warm, and I inhale his scent, diving headfirst into the emotions he’s pulling deep from inside me.

My mouth fuses to his, a hunger clawing at my belly. The sweet innocent kisses we shared before when we were kids is nothing compared to this kiss. This kiss holds a need, a possessiveness I want to grab onto.

“What are you doing?” I ask, my voice weak. I don’t want him to go, I don’t want him to run away from me, not after I’ve caught a glimpse of the boy I once knew. I stare at his broad shoulders, his muscles rippling beneath his shirt, his body full of tension.

He wasn’t expecting the kiss, or my reaction to him and maybe that’s what he needs, to be shocked. I don’t really know, but I can’t let go of what happened. I’m waiting for an answer, but it never comes, and though I’m not surprised, I am hurt.

“Don’t go!” I order, but he’s already out the door, slamming it closed shut behind him, leaving me sitting on the bed naked from the waist down with nothing but the memory of his lips on mine. What did we just do? When I feel like my legs are steady enough to hold my weight, I slide off the bed and pick up my discarded clothes. Just as I’m pulling my panties up, the door flies open again.

Cally stands in the doorway her mouth gaping open, betrayal and hurt in her now cold gaze. “You knew I liked him! How could you do this to me? I thought you were my friend.”

“It’s not like that, Cally.” And it’s not. She wouldn’t understand that though. No one would. No one knows of the past we share.

My instant messenger lights up.

Noah: we need things. let’s go shopping tonight.

Me: what sort of things

Noah: you need a new dress for the formal vendor night, and I need…things

Me: what sort of things?

Noah: it’s personal

 

I grab my phone and text him.

ME: WHAT SORT OF THINGS

NOAH: don’t yell its rude

ME: THEN TELL ME

NOAH: it’s PERSONAL

ME: tell me or I’ll throw away all the gummies u left at my place.

NOAH: u wouldn’t dare

ME: wouldn’t I though?

NOAH: underwear

ME: I’m sorry?

NOAH: underwear. I washed my underwear with a red polo and they’re all pink. every pair.

ME: <tears of joy emoji>

 

I laugh out loud so hard I snort, and he looks up from his desk, craning his neck to look through my window at me. I stand and walk across the hall to his office, and flop down in the chair across from his desk.

“So, tiger, how pink are we talkin’, here?” I put a finger up to catch the tears under my eyes from laughing so hard, and hope I don’t have an unintentional smoky-eye look from my mascara.

“Pink. Like…pink.” He replies, shaking his head.

“That’s not like you, Noah. You’re the perfect housekeeper. You’re great at laundry. You did such a great job cleaning up my place that I can’t find anything.” I roll my eyes.

When I mention the cleaning job he did in my apartment, his cheeks turn pink. I can’t say I’ve ever seen that happen before. It’s weird. It’s intriguing.

“Oh, well…,” he rubs a broad palm up and down the back of his neck. “I’ve been kinda distracted lately. It was just a stupid mistake.”

“Well, we definitely don’t want you walking around Vegas in pink shorts. What if our rooms are on the same floor? If you pick up some girl, and bring her back, her laughter will probably wake me up.” I fan myself until my laughter subsides.

“I’m not picking up any girls in Vegas,” he says, putting his hands behind his head as he leans back in his chair.

“Oh? I thought you said you were cooling things off with…what was the last one’s name? Is that back on?” I ask, hoping my curiosity sounds light and friendly, though it is definitely neither.

“No, that’s been over for a while. I’m not picking up women in Vegas, though. I’m thinking of trying something different…,” he looks down, then casts his eyes up at me, the pale blue orbs turning dark as they peek up from under thick, dark brows.

“What?! Don’t tell me you’re batting for the other team now. I mean, I’ve had a few gay guys ask me about you, but I always thought for sure you preferred an innie to an outie,” I laugh.

“Um, no. Definitely one-hundred-percent straight, thanks,” then he looks at me and we say in unison, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.” Seinfeld. Our mutual love of 90s sitcoms is boundless. It is one of a thousand things that make him perfect.

“So, what then?” I ask, dipping my brows.

“I’m taking a little break from the usual, that’s all. I’m thinking maybe I want to try…I dunno. Something…more.” He shrugs and holds my gaze intensely.

“So…,” I swallow hard, the words catching in my throat. Please, dear God, tell me this isn’t the conversation I’ve dreaded for the past five years. Please, please, don’t let him have found someone he’s serious about.

Q: What was it about Micah Ward that made you fall for him?

A: Micah is pretty much the exact opposite of my last boyfriend. Kael—my ex—wasn’t a good listener and could be selfish. I wasn’t a priority to him at all, and he really hurt me. I think that’s part of what drew me to Micah. He sees through to the real me, and he makes me feel safe. He loves me with his whole heart. If only all girls could date an empath!

 

Q: What was the scariest part of your adventure in this story?

A: Without giving anything away (of course!), there were so many moments where my heart was beating so fast I still can’t believe it didn’t burst. The obvious answer is toward the end, when Micah and I tried to escape the Nation. Yes, being chased through the mountains was definitely terrifying on the surface—but Micah and I were together, so it wasn’t the worst thing we went through. Instead, the most frightening time for me was when he was attacked during his sentencing. I thought he’d been killed. The idea of a world without him in it was horrifying.

 

Q: On a happier note, what was your favorite date with Micah?

A: We had to be pretty unconventional with our dates, since… you know… we were forbidden by law to see each other. There was a lot of sneaking around. A lot of close calls. That made everything more exciting, too. My favorite date with him, though, was just slow dancing together in his apartment on a rainy night. He played this old song from before the Nation was formed—“The Very Thought of You” by Billie Holiday. I didn’t expect him—this strong, distinguished guy—to do something sweet and vulnerable like that.

 

Q: What’s next for you and Micah?

A: We have a long road ahead of us before we can really have our happily-ever-after. For one thing, we’re on our own now, and we have to figure out how to survive in a completely different place, with no one to fall back on for help and a completely different language to learn. It’s intimidating, and everywhere we turn, the challenges keep racking up. We have each other, though, and I hope that’ll be enough. Love is always enough, I think.

“But I’m worth more to you alive.” The words were more for my benefit than for his. It meant he would be hesitant to stab me—at least fatally. Of course, I’d prefer to avoid it altogether.

He smiled. “You were listening. Good girl.”

I’m going to enjoy hurting you, I decided, my mouth curling with the thought. “And what am I supposed to be finding?” I asked, tracing his sizable erection. Hmm, it seemed every part of him was well proportioned and enticing. Too bad he chose the wrong side of this battle. Because I agreed with him—we’d have fun with each other.

“All right, sweetheart. You want to play this game?”

I gave him my best innocent look. “Who says I’m playing?”

“Nothing in this house, including the cars, the clothes, the money, or you, belongs to your father anymore. It won’t be automatically transferred to you either. It belongs to the new Boss.”

“Meaning you?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.

He smirks. “Nail on the head, cucciola. Get in the fucking car.”

Turning my head, I look behind me at the closed door that leads to the only house I’ve ever lived in. My life is over. The only life I’ve ever known is over. I could run to Mauro instead of getting into this car with Gavino. But I have a feeling that I would regret that immediately.

I’m not sure which devil to choose. The devil that I know without a doubt will be cruel, that I will hate with every breath that I take or the one that I’m attracted to, the one that I could easily fall for and end up completely heartbroken with.

Neither idea feels the slightest bit appealing. No matter what, I’m going to end up battered, bruised, ruined, and broken. I was born and raised in a small farming town in California. I met my husband when I was 16 and he was 19. We married four years later and have two little boys! We lived in Oregon for a few years while he served in the US Coast Guard.
