“I’d better go and tell the others what you’ve said.” She walked toward the stern of the boat slowly.

“Is it safe to swim after a meal like that? I mean, most humans have to wait a bit before they go swimming after eating. How does that work for you?” He looked adorably confused and genuinely curious, so she humored his question.

“Once I shift, the mer characteristics win out, so it won’t be a problem.” She sent him a smile as she walked farther away.

It was hard to leave him, which surprised her, but she couldn’t stay. She had responsibilities to her people, much as she would have loved to spend the rest of the day with the sexy bear shifter. He followed her, and they both stood at the stern of the boat, his hooks picking up nothing during their meal and continuing to just drift with no action.

“If you go a little northwest, you’ll find some big sturgeon and halibut. The fishing is much better in that direction right now,” she offered, hoping to help in some small way. “I might as well give you a solid tip on where to find dinner since you fed me part of your lunch.” She turned to him, laughing lightly.

“The tip is appreciated, but you don’t owe me anything, sweetheart.”

The breath caught in her throat at his use of the endearment. He also stepped right up to her, not a foot between their bodies as he looked down into her eyes. She almost forgot to breathe.

“But…” She didn’t know what she was objecting to as his head drifted lower. Was he going to kiss her?

“Ssh,” he soothed her, drawing her under his spell. “If you really want to repay me for the sandwich, all I ask of you is a single kiss.”

What? Alarm bells sounded in her mind, but they were drowned out by the nearness of him. She could feel his warmth only inches away from her, and she wanted to snuggle up against him. She’d been so cold for so long…

Which was an odd thought for a mer to have. Mer didn’t feel cold. The oceans were their home. So what had gotten into her now?

And why was she suddenly so eager to snuggle up to a land dweller? Oh, he was a shifter—they had that in common—but he still lived on land, and she in the sea. Though she could survive very well on dry land too. In fact, she’d spent most of her youth on land, with her family, doing the normal things that humans and shifters did. She’d gone to school, had friends, drove a car, had a job, and even moved in with her boyfriend.

But the situation with Dirk was what had driven her into the sea. She refused to go down that path again. Dirk had been human, a little voice inside reminded her. Andrew was a shifter. Maybe things would be different with a shifter.

Did she dare try to find out?

As his lips touched hers, all thoughts fled in the face of his passion. What started as a simple kiss turned into something much more profound within a single heartbeat.

He took her into his embrace, and she did get a chance to snuggle up to his warmth, basking in the feel of his strong arms around her. He kissed her lightly, at first, then gradually deepened the kiss when she made no move to push him away. His tongue danced with hers, showing her new patterns of pleasure even as her knees threatened to give way.

He was holding her up, his hands around her waist, supporting her, not imprisoning. And that was the key. He held her firmly, but lightly. She could break free any time she wanted…which was why she stayed.

 Sea Dragon RDL Ban

About Sea Dragon:

1-SeaDrgn-400x600

A blind dragon who just wants to be left alone…

Sir Hrardorr was once the mightiest of fighters. Now he’s blind and useless. His knight is dead and he can’t even go into proper mourning because he needs help just to get around. Part sea dragon, he decides to go to the Southern Lair to rusticate by the coast. He can fly out over the open water and dive into the sea, where he still has at least some ability to hunt on his own. He doesn’t expect to meet a human woman out on the water, fishing in her small sailboat, but he does, and unexpectedly, they become friends.

A young man who gave up the sword to help the Lair’s healer…

Seth grew up in the Lair and has long had a crush on the most beautiful girl in the town, Livia. But she is the famous sea captain’s daughter, and far, far above him. It’d be one thing if he was a knight or at least a candidate to be one, but Seth gave up all dreams of knighthood when he chose to apprentice himself to the Lair’s elderly healer—the closest thing to a grandmother he’d ever had. His gentle heart has changed the course of his entire life and he’s not sure it’s for the better, but he sees no other option.

A newly made knight who doesn’t know how to be one…

Sir Gowan is a warrior. He was a teacher of fighting when he caught the dragoness’s eye and she chose him as her new knight. Genlitha is a stubborn female and though Gowan tried to refuse, he found he could not turn down the magnificent dragoness, even though he knows nothing about being a knight. They have come to the Southern Lair so Genlitha can teach young fliers how to best navigate the tricky winds off the ocean, and to gain time for Gowan to learn how to be her proper partner.

Three humans. Two dragons. Attraction that cannot be denied…

Both Seth and Gowan are drawn to the lovely Livia, and Genlitha finds the attraction she had for Hrardorr when they were still both dragonets has only grown stronger over the years, but there are obstacles. Hrardorr has sworn to never choose another knight. Seth has sworn to be a healer, even though it’s not his true calling. Gowan is just trying to figure out how to survive in this new world of knights and dragons.

And then they are attacked from the sea by a mighty fleet with dragon-killing weapons, and the town and Lair find themselves totally unprepared to fight. It will be up to the five of them to save the town…if they can. It seems impossible, but they have to at least try.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Livia didn’t know why it was so, only that all the married knights were parts of trios. Happy trios, to be sure. She’d seen a few of the Lair women shopping in the square from time to time, and they all seemed happy enough. Nobody ever claimed the knights were bad husbands. Quite the contrary.

But for some reason, not many of the men who lived alongside the dragons up on the cliffs were married. There were few Lair wives and, because of that, few children.

Occasionally, a knight would form a liaison with a town woman, but nobody had become a Lair wife from the town in recent memory. The affairs seemed merely to be of convenience, not love everlasting.

“Mates, their dragon partners, and eventually children,” Hrardorr seemed to answer her question. “Little dragonettes and tiny human babies, with two dragon parents and three human parents.”

“All of them?” Livia asked, intrigued by the concept.

“Of course,” Hrardorr said. “That is the family unit of the Lair. They all share in the parenting of any offspring, dragon and human alike. It is the way we have always done it, since the first fighting dragon partnered with the first knight.”

“I had no idea. I mean, I’d heard things, but nothing like this. It sounds kind of…nice.” She marveled at the idea of a baby dragon being raised equally by humans and dragons, or a baby human calling a dragon papa. “Do you have children, Sir Hrardorr?”

The dragon’s mouth tightened. “No. And now, I never will.”

“Never is a very long time,” she said softly, wanting to offer comfort.

“Don’t I know it.” His tone was bitter.

“Being blind isn’t the end of the world,” she said, confronting his depression head on.

His great head reared back as if she’d struck him. “You know I’m blind?”

“I figured it out. A few of my father’s people do business at the Lair, and they bring back news of new arrivals. I assumed you’re the new dragon that has come here to recuperate. Am I wrong?”

A sigh gusted out of Hrardorr’s mouth, filling her sails for a brief moment. She had to change tack to get back to him, but he didn’t seem to notice.

“No, milady. You’re not wrong. I’m the damaged dragon who can’t even fend for himself anymore.”

“Seems to me you just bagged a menacing shark all by yourself and chomped him to little pieces without any help at all,” she mused. “You’re not helpless. Hopeless, maybe…and that can be changed.”

“You’re a strange female,” Hrardorr said, making her bark a laugh she hadn’t expected.

“You’re not the first person to tell me that,” she allowed, smiling.

“I’m not a person. I’m a dragon.” He bared his pointy teeth, as if grinning at her.

“Point taken, Sir Dragon.” She regarded him for a moment, searching for the right words, but she couldn’t find them. “I like fishing. I do it most days when my father is away. Maybe you’d like to meet me here again sometime? I mean, I need protection from the circling sharks, and I suppose you could make yourself useful in lowering their numbers before someone from the town ends up maimed or dead. The fishermen would be grateful, I’m sure, as would most of the townsfolk.”

“You don’t say.” Hrardorr looked as if he was thinking over her words. “I like to swim. And I also like the taste of shark.”

“Really? What does it taste like to you?”

“Like victory.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

Jack was really happy with the outcome of the meeting. John had gone farther than Jack had expected, going out on a limb to offer sanctuary to any mer needing it. That was a big step, and showed John was willing to take a risk if it might help save innocent lives.

But then, John was a good guy. Half the reason they’d all chosen to follow him as Alpha was because they could count on him when times were tough. He’d never leave a man behind. And he wouldn’t turn his back on someone who needed help.

Jack returned to the kitchen to find his mermaid practically nodding off in her soup. Poor girl was tired. No. Tired wasn’t the word for it. She was exhausted. Running out of gas as he watched her.

“Probably time for you to go back to bed,” he said, stepping to her side.

She looked up at him, and he could see the dark circles under her pretty eyes.

“You’re right. I think I’ve been running on adrenaline for the past ten minutes. I was a little…uh…apprehensive about meeting your Alpha.” She sat back in her chair and brushed her hair back from her face. “I’m glad he turned out to be such a nice guy.”

Jack had to laugh. “Oh yeah, Big John’s a regular ol’ teddy bear. You should see him with a grenade launcher in his hands.”

She giggled, and he found the sound enchanting. His inner bear wanted to rub up against her and hear the sound again. The beast inside him was fast becoming attached to the mermaid, and Jack wasn’t sure whether to be overjoyed at finding a woman his finicky bear actually liked and wanted, or afraid that he was about to have his heart broken by a fickle fish who wouldn’t stay on land.

Wasn’t that the way all those old stories ended? The mermaid swims off, leaving her broken-hearted lover on the shore. Jack feared very much that’s how he was going to end up, but for the life of him, he couldn’t stop thinking about being with her—giving a relationship with her a try.

And Jack wasn’t the kind of guy who’d ever thought about having a relationship with a woman. He was very much a love ‘em and leave ‘em sort of bear, never sticking with one female for more than a few days or weeks at a time. The moment they started to get clingy, he was gone, his bear roaring to be free.

But not with Grace. Something about her made his inner bear want to be around her. She brought out his protective instincts, for sure. That was a given, considering how he’d found her.

There was more, though. A lot more. Every moment he was in her company, the attraction seemed to escalate, morphing into something a lot more complicated than simple attraction.

She lurched forward in her chair and then staggered to her feet. Jack put his hands out to steady her.

“Are you sure you can make it back to the bedroom?” he asked, truly concerned for her welfare. She didn’t look as strong as she had only a few minutes before, which was to say, she looked weak as a kitten.

“Uh…actually…I’m not too sure.”

That was all he had to hear. He stepped closer and scooped her into his arms.

“Hang on, honey,” he told her, loving the feel of her in his arms. She placed her arms around his neck, and something inside him roared in triumph. She was leaning against him, her head on his shoulder, and he didn’t ever want to let her go.

Whoa. Those were some heavy thoughts, right there. He tried not to think about what it might mean while he walked out of the kitchen and down the hall to the guest room he’d put at her disposal.

He placed her gently on the edge of the bed. He let her feet dangle off the side and sat next to her, his arm still around her shoulder, helping prop her up.

“Do you want to make a pit stop or shall we just tuck you in again?”

“I’m okay for now. How about we just sit and talk for a minute?” He was surprised by her request, but willing to do whatever she liked.

“I can do that.” He left his arm around her, and she didn’t object, which satisfied him on some primal level. “What’s on your mind?”

She tilted her head to look up at him. “I want to know more about your people. About you. I know very little about other kinds of shifters—especially the land-based ones.”

Was she flirting with him? Nah. That was probably just his wishful thinking.
