Saffy definitely preferred the smiling version of Bruce, with dimples that were so pronounced they could be seen through his thick beard, though she could see how he would be a hard man to have a relationship with.

Wait, what?

How in the world had she gone from thinking about this disastrous dinner to what it would be like to date Bruce?

Of course, now that the particular thought had sneaked into her mind, she couldn’t push it out. Would he smile like he did early on in the evening, revealing that secret dimple, the glimmer of mischief in his eyes? She wondered what Bruce might be like in private, when he totally let his guard down. Did he ever completely let his guard down? Somehow she didn’t think he did, at least not often and not to very many people.

What wasn’t idiotic was the way he ran his hands over her body, first on her shoulders and down her arms, then to her waist. He plucked the T-shirt from her waistband, exposing the strip of skin at her waist.

“Do you need some help?” he whispered even as he worked her shirt over her head.

Meghan heard the plop of wet cotton on the floor, but she didn’t take her eyes off him. Her thoughts raced through her head. He’d pulled back yesterday, which was definitely reasonable, although disappointing. But now? Now, he looked like he wanted nothing more than to take her every way imaginable.

And Meghan had a very vivid imagination.

He stepped into her space and pulled her to him, his big hand splayed across her back.

“What about the thing we talked about yesterday?” Meghan was horrified the moment the words came out of her mouth. What the hell was she doing?

He froze, but he didn’t take his hands off of her. In fact, she could feel him fiddling with the clasp of her bra. “I haven’t started working on your project, so I’m not technically your employee yet.”

“Oh. Well.” Meghan swallowed hard. “That’s a totally different situation, then, right?”

“Right.” The clasp sprang open, and Jason’s hands were all over her bare back and then at her shoulders, slipping the straps down her arms. Meghan panicked for a split second. She could think of only two times when Jason saw her completely topless, but by his appreciative look, he approved. Dr. Russell has a bad reputation around our hospital. The scrub techs say he’s cold-blooded, the nurses say he’s too cocky for his own good, and the residents say he’s the best surgeon in the world—really, just a swell guy!—on the off chance he’s within earshot.

I try to avoid him and his temper at all costs. It’s just as easy to admire his sexy, grip-it-while-he’s-ravishing-you hair and chiseled jaw from a healthy distance, preferably from the other end of the hallway…half-hidden behind a plant.

Oh, and as if that’s not difficult enough, my silly crush on him—the one I’ve tried to stomp on until it disappears—might just be reciprocated.

I’m fine.

I take my job seriously. There will be no smoldering bedroom eyes across the operating table, no angry almost-kisses in the storage closet. (Well, no more of those.)

What’s the phrase? An apple a day keeps the doctor away?

Maybe I should go for a whole damn bushel.
