About A.K. Evans:

A.K. Evans is a married mother of two boys residing in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. After graduating from Lafayette College in 2004 with two degrees (one in English and one in Economics & Business), she pursued a career in the insurance and financial services industry. Not long after, Evans realized the career was not for her. She went on to manage her husband’s performance automotive business and drive the shop race cars for the next thirteen years. While the business afforded her freedoms she wouldn’t necessarily have had in a typical 9-5 job, after eleven years she was no longer receiving personal fulfillment from her chosen career path. Following many discussions, lots of thought, and tons of encouragement, Andrea decided to pursue her dream of becoming a writer.

Between her day job, writing, and homeschooling her two boys, Evans is left with very little free time. When she finds scraps of spare time, Evans enjoys reading, doing yoga, watching NY Rangers hockey, dancing, and vacationing with her family. Andrea, her husband, and her children are currently working on taking road trips to visit all 50 states (though, Alaska and Hawaii might require flights).

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Thanks again for making sure I didn’t completely embarrass myself earlier,” I broke the silence between us.

“You’re welcome.  Are you always so clumsy?”

My eyes widened.  “What?”

“That’s the second time I’ve saved you from getting your face busted open,” he clarified.  “I’m just wondering if that’s a normal thing for you.”

I shook my head.  “No, it seems to only happen around you.”

He offered one slow nod but said nothing in response.  His eyes left mine and he scanned the room.

“Lorenzo?” I called.

He dropped his stare to me and answered, “Yeah?”

“What’s happening?”

He pulled his brows together.  “Come again?”

“It’s just…” I stammered.  “I feel like there’s something more going on here between us.”

“Fuck,” he muttered quietly, looking away from me.  He took several moments to live inside his own head.  When he looked at me again, his eyes were haunted.  “Do you want this one day?” he asked.

“I’m sorry?”

“A wedding?  Marriage?  Commitment?”

I felt my body get tight.  “Sure, yeah, I mean, one day I want to get married.  But not now.”

“Right.  Then you need to understand now that I’m not that man and I never will be,” he stated firmly.

“Okay,” I replied, stretching out the word hoping to indicate my confusion at his statement.

He didn’t offer an explanation, but I was still curious.  Was he saying that he was okay with a one-night fling, but nothing long-term?

“So, if I had said that I was just looking for a hookup, would you have had a different response?” I wondered.

His eyes flared.  “Is that your thing?  Having a random hookup?”

I shook my head slowly.  “No, but that doesn’t answer my question.”

He shrugged his shoulders.  “If you were anyone else, sure.  But you’re not just anyone else.  And that means nothing will ever happen between us.  Ever,” he stated firmly and with such conviction.

My whole body went rigid as my eyes darted back and forth trying to figure out how I could have so easily mistaken the glances from him and the attraction I thought was mutual.

“I don’t understand.  Are you not attracted to me?”

Something flashed in his eyes.  Regret maybe?  Frustration perhaps?  I couldn’t tell, but it didn’t matter because he answered, “Doesn’t matter, you and I won’t ever happen, Jolie.”

Thankfully, at that moment, the song ended.

I pulled out of his hold and walked away.  I went to the bathroom so I could pull myself together.  When I stepped out a few minutes later and returned to the reception hall for the dinner, I stopped at the bar and grabbed myself a drink.

If Lorenzo didn’t want me, that was his loss.  Clearly, he believed I wasn’t good enough for him.  That was fine; I was going to enjoy myself tonight.  I kept my attention focused on anyone and anything other than Lorenzo.  As the night went on, I had more drinks and did a lot of dancing.

Putting him out of my mind, or at least telling myself that that is what I was doing, was the best decision I could have made.  Because if I hadn’t, I would have realized that he spent the rest of the night with his eyes on me.

Pulling my phone out, I saw Ava had sent several texts.

OMG. I found the perfect guy for you. He’s not blonde and he’s really, really tall.

A second text followed that.

Jojo, this man.

I started laughing until I continued on to her third text.

I just approached him.

Oh no. I was going to kill her. I knew this once I read her fourth and fifth text.

He’s single. I’ve confirmed it. He seems like he could be interested in a good time.

And he’s nice.

I finally responded.

What is wrong with you?

She replied almost instantly.

Nothing. Get over here. I’m still over by the bar. I’ll just make a quick introduction and skedaddle to our reserved area.

I let out a sigh. As I walked over, I came up with a game plan. I figured if the guy was hot and seemed nice enough, I could have a drink with him. If not, I’d blame my inability to chat on needing to not ditch my co-workers.

When the area of the bar where Ava and I had been sitting earlier came into view, I thought my eyes had to be deceiving me. Ava’s back was to me as she was rambling on about something, likely me, to the man next to her. I had to give her credit. The guy was gorgeous. He wasn’t blonde and he was tall. There was one small problem, though.

The man was Lorenzo.

I took in a deep breath, let it out, and moved over to her.

“…and it’s been a while for her. I just want her to have a good time tonight,” Ava said until she stopped speaking because Lorenzo was no longer paying attention to her.

He caught sight of me, ran his eyes over the length of my body until they settled on my face, and never returned his attention to my outspoken friend.

Ava noticed he was distracted and turned around to find me standing there.

“Here she is,” she declared. “Jojo, this is…I’m sorry, what’s your name?”

“Lorenzo.”

“Right, sorry,” she muttered. “Jojo, this is Lorenzo. And Lorenzo, this is my friend, Jolie. Everyone calls her Jojo.”

I looked to Lorenzo and asked, “Would you excuse us one second?”

He gave me a nod.

I grabbed Ava’s hand and dragged her a few feet away as she called out to him, “Save her seat!”

When we’d moved out of earshot of Lorenzo, I leaned in and seethed, “What did you say to him?”

Oblivious to what she’d just done, she was grinning from ear to ear. “First, I confirmed that he wasn’t here with anyone and that he wasn’t meeting anyone. Once I established that he was single and available, I told him, in not so many words, that I had a friend who needed some companionship before we had to buy stock in batteries.”

I closed my eyes and stood up straight to pinch the bridge of my nose. “Please tell me you did not do that.”

“Jo, have you seen him?” she cried. “That guy is gorgeous. I know you’d prefer to have a relationship, but if that guy can give your hands a break for the night, why not?!”

“I know him!” I nearly exploded.

She jerked her head back in surprise. “You know that guy and you haven’t hooked up with him?”

Just then, a few more of our co-workers had arrived and walked up to us. I took in another deep breath and advised, “I’m going to go deal with the colossal mess you’ve just put me in. I’ll meet up with you in a few minutes.”

Ava took off with the girls from work and I turned back to Lorenzo.

I was in big trouble.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“You can’t sleep out here tonight.”

“I’ll be fine,” she assured me.

“I won’t.”

“What?”

“Ekko, follow me and you can stay at my place as long as you need.”

She shook her head and vehemently refused. “I can’t do that.  You’ve already been generous enough and you don’t even know me.”

I narrowed my eyes a bit before I teased, “I think I can protect myself if you try to harm me.”

She let out a laugh but quickly stopped herself.  “That’s not what I meant.”

I barely heard her words because I was so intrigued by the sound of her laughter.  It was captivating.

“I know,” I confessed.  “I also know that you’ve fallen on some hard times and you need some help.  There’s nothing wrong with that.  I can help you.”

“Okay, but I don’t really know you.”

“I rescued you from an attempted abduction and we just had dessert together.  You know I work for a private investigation company and that the local police know who I am because of the work I do.  Do you really think I’d hurt you?”

She shook her head and responded, “No.”

“So you’ll stay with me then?”

“I don’t think I should.” She held firm in her decision.

“Fine,” I declared.  “Then let me get you a hotel room for a few nights while you get your living arrangements sorted.  There’s no deadline.”

“You would do that?”

There was no denying the surprise in her voice.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I grinned at her before I answered honestly, “Because you need help right now and I’ve got the means to give you that help.”

Her lips parted, and my eyes dropped to them.

“What’s it going to be, sugar?”

“You’ve already given me so much,” she argued.  “I can’t accept any more money from you.”

“Looks like you’re staying at my place then,” I noted as I crossed my arms over my chest and cocked an eyebrow.  I couldn’t miss the heat that flashed in her eyes.

A moment later when I thought she was going to give in, she said, “I’ll get myself a hotel room.”

I held my hand out to her car door and said, “Lead the way.”

“What?”

“I’m going to make sure you have a safe, clean place to stay tonight.”

She sighed and got in her car.  Once she started it up, I got in my truck and followed her out of the lot.  Not much later, I pulled in behind her at what had to be the dumpiest, most unsafe motel in the entire city.

I hopped out of the truck, marched up to her door, and opened it.  “Not a chance in hell you’re staying here,” I warned her.

She looked at the motel and back at me.  “Why not?”

“I’m not convinced they even have beds here.  Besides, if you moved out of your boyfriend’s place because you don’t want to be around drugs, then you shouldn’t be staying here.”

“Dom, this is all I can afford,” she croaked.

“Let. Me. Help. You.”

I enunciated each word so she’d understand just how serious I was.

“I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’re you.”

“Yes, I am me.  That’s not really a good reason.”

“I have no business being anywhere near someone like you.”

What the fuck did that mean?

“Someone like me?”

“You’re going to make me say it out loud?” she worried.

Even though I had a feeling I knew what she was getting at, I returned, “Ekko, I have no idea what you are talking about.  If you don’t want to tell me what that means then tell me that you’ll come with me back to my place where I’ll give you a safe, clean, comfortable place to stay for a few days while you get your stuff sorted.”

She closed her eyes and let out a sigh.

Finally, she gave in.  “Alright, it’s not like my luck could possibly get any worse.  If you kill me, you’ll really just be helping me out of a very difficult situation.”

I didn’t like hearing her say that.

“Nobody is killing you,” I asserted.

“I’m just saying…it wouldn’t be the worst thing that’s happened.”

“Do you want to come in for a while?” I asked.

Cruz stepped just inside the door and closed it, but answered, “We both have a long week ahead of us and you’ve had a very busy weekend.  I probably shouldn’t stay.”

I put my hands to Cruz’s chest and shared, “I had a really great time tonight, Cruz.  Thank you for giving this to me.”

“Happy to give it to you.”

“Can I give you something now in return?”

I felt Cruz’s fingertips dig in slightly at my hips before his hands moved around my waist and pulled me into his body.

“All I want is to know that you had a good time tonight,” he began.  “I don’t expect nor do I want you to do anything for me in return.”

Disappointed, I dropped my gaze from his and stared at his throat.

“Why do you look like I’ve just crushed all your hopes and dreams?” Cruz asked.

I shook my head, feeling frustrated.

Cruz squeezed me a little tighter.  “Look at me, Lex.”

I did as he asked.

Then, I felt the back of his knuckles brush along my cheek as he urged, “Tell me why you’re sad.”

“I feel pretty tonight,” I started.  “For the first time in a very long time, I feel sexy and confident.  All I wanted to do was kiss you before you left.”

I barely got the words out when Cruz’s mouth came crashing down on mine.  With his lips pressed to mine, I slid my hands up his chest and around his neck.  As our mouths opened and our tongues began to taste each other, my body melted further into his.  One of Cruz’s arms stayed wrapped tight around the upper part of my back, but the other one…oh, the other one.  It dipped lower and lower until it slid down over the curve of my ass.

I loved it, so I gave him a moan as encouragement.

He gave me a gentle squeeze.

I really loved that.

After a bit more squeezing, kissing, and moaning, Cruz tore his mouth from mine.  His forehead resting on mine, we both fought to catch our breath.

Cruz did it arguably faster than me because he started speaking.  “Don’t keep it in, Lexi.”

“What?”

Pulling his head back from mine, he instructed, “With me, you don’t have to hide anything.  Give in to what you feel, Princess, no matter what it is. Scared, sexy, or anything in between.  It doesn’t matter what it is; if it’s in me to see you through that, I will.”

And of everything he did for me in the last few minutes, what he had just said was what I loved most.

“I feel like I’m dreaming, Cruz.  Are you even real?”

“It’s time to wake up, warrior.  I’m as real as it gets.”

Once those words slipped out of his mouth, he pressed a kiss to the tip of my nose and declared, “I’m going to head out now.”

I let the disappointment of that wash over me for about two seconds before Cruz added, “I had a fantastic time tonight.  And you were, by far, the most beautiful woman in the restaurant.  Don’t think I’m leaving because I don’t like what I see.  This wasn’t about me and what I want.  Tonight was about giving you what you needed…giving you what someone took from you.  I hope you got that back.”

Warmth spread through me.  “I did, Cruz.  I got that and so much more.”

This had to be a mistake.

Everything I had learned told me that this wasn’t how it was supposed to be.  It was supposed to look different.  Sound different.

I had it wrong.  If I ever told anyone, they’d tell me I was mistaken. But something was gnawing away at me inside telling me this wasn’t right.  It didn’t feel good and it wasn’t what I wanted.

But where was the struggle?  The blood?  The bruises?  The cries for help?

This is supposed to happen in an alley behind a dumpster.  I’m supposed to be kicking and screaming and fighting.

But I’m not.

This doesn’t happen in a dorm room.  This doesn’t happen in a bed.  This doesn’t happen with the guy you like.

But it is.

This must be a misunderstanding.

I wore a short skirt.  I went on a few dates with him.  I agreed to come back to his dorm room tonight.  I cuddled up next to him.  I leaned in to kiss him.  I even enjoyed kissing him.

And in a matter of minutes, it all changed.

When the soft caresses and tender kisses turned into rough and forceful restraint, the butterflies I felt in my belly disappeared and were replaced by paralyzing fear.

When he rolled me to my back and pinned me to the bed, I froze. I didn’t fight.  I didn’t scream.  I didn’t try to get away.  I only said no and asked him to stop.

The weight of his body hovered over mine.

I said no.

I sank deeper and deeper into the sheets.

But I liked him.

He gripped my wrists above my head.

I said no.

He forced my skirt up around my hips.

Maybe I had been asking for it dressed like this.

He pushed my panties to the side.

I said no.

He smiled through my growing opposition.

But I had flirted with him.

Then he raped me.

And I only said no.

I withdrew.  I went somewhere else.  Physically, I was still there, but my mind took me to a different place.  Finals were coming up next week and I had a paper due in two days.  I needed to get back to my dorm so I could finish proofreading that paper.  I was always a good student and I focused on that as I lay there silenced and still in the bed of his dorm room.

Suddenly, my mind was back in the room with my body and he was still on top of me.

I wanted to scream.  It was there, at the back of my throat, but it wouldn’t come out.  The fear seeped into every part of me, but most especially, it silenced my voice.  If I screamed, this might end up looking like an actual sexual assault.

It could be violent and bloody.

It could be worse.

My breath was caught in my throat.  Perhaps it got stuck there simply to protect me.

But what about what my parents had told me?

Always stand up for yourself.

Before my parents dropped me off at college, my father gave me a lecture.  “Don’t go out alone at night.  Make sure someone you trust always knows where you are and who you’re with.  Stay safe.  And if someone ever tries to hurt you, you fight back.”

I didn’t heed his advice.  I didn’t fight back.

I didn’t know for sure, but guessed that it couldn’t have been more than twenty minutes later when my attacker finished.  He rolled off me and fixed his clothes.

Feeling ashamed and embarrassed, I quickly got up off the bed without making eye contact and pulled my skirt back down.

It was over.

I needed to get out, so I moved toward the door.

But his voice stopped me as I wrapped my hand around the doorknob.

“Don’t act like that isn’t exactly what you wanted tonight.”

That’s when I knew.

Maybe I didn’t run.  Maybe I didn’t fight.  But just because I didn’t fight, didn’t mean that I gave my consent.

And just because I liked him doesn’t mean it wasn’t rape.
