What happened in the prologue – chapter four?
Today is the day that Raelyn finds out if she’s cancer free or if the chemo treatments failed. A little over three months ago she’d be engaged to a man named Nick and had been counting down the days. Then she’d been diagnosed with a tumor and given six months to live – her new countdown. And then her fiance left her. So other than her best friend and roommate, she has no one.
Her doctor tells her she’s in remission and she won’t need to do another phase of chemo. But it’s important that she knows her kind of tumor might redevelop at some point. But for now…she’s free.
The next chapter skips forward six months. We find out Raelyn owns an accounting firm, Adam & Jennings Accounting Services, with her best friend Cale Adams. Cale worked with a huge account – Heathman Enterprises – and was passing it over to her so he could focus on another big fish.
Raelyn has to meet with Damien first and she’s incredibly nervous about meeting with him. She walks into the conference room and is floored by him. He’s captivating, and she quickly becomes flustered, but when he calls her on it, she pulls it together. He tells her that while she thinks she’s there to take his account over from Cale, she’s actually there to prove she’s worthy of the of the position.
There’s an obvious animosity and tension in the room when Cale steps in to observe their meeting. Something is going on between them and Raelyn isn’t sure what, but she’s determined that she can’t get in the middle and she needs to turn down his account.
After their meeting, Damien asks Raelyn to dinner, but she refuses. Damien is a man used to getting his way and insists that she’ll want to hear what he has to say.
