Read Along Chapter 19-22

Chapters 19-22

Allegra wakes up in a cold, damp room, probably a basement. She has been kidnapped by Carlo Morandi, her mother’s killer who didn’t die after all when he was shot by the police and fell into the East River. His accomplice is Tony, the man who was following her. She prays that Davison and the cops will find her before he takes her back to Naples where he says he’ll make Allegra her sex slave. She is given hope when Carlo gives her food wrapped in paper that’s marked with her father’s handwriting, so she knows she’s close to home. Before he can leave with her, Allegra sings for him to delay him as much as she can. Carlo becomes enraged knowing she’s delaying him on purpose and start to choke her as a warning when Detective Leary bursts through the door and shoots Carlo dead. Leary whisks her away and puts her on a gurney into an ambulance, where Davison is waiting for her. They both cry and she passes out from the pain meds the EMTs give her.

At the hospital, Leary tells Allegra, Davison, and her father how they found her. While Davison is in the bathroom, she tells Leary about Carlo’s plans to take her to Italy to make her his sex slave.

A few days after her release from the hospital, Allegra is at Davison’s place. He reveals that he was angry with her for not telling him about being followed and he heard what she told Leary in her hospital room, and he hurls a vase at the wall in anger because he couldn’t protect her. She holds him as he releases his tears of anger and frustration. They have sex.

To get away from the media scrutiny, Davison takes her on an idyllic trip to Italy, first to Venice where he gives her a ruby ring to affirm his love and commitment to her, and then they travel to Naples to visit her mother’s grave. After they visit the cemetery, in the Ferrari that Davison has rented, she tells him she’s having a redo of her graduation recital in two months. He takes her hand and puts it on his thigh, rubbing it with his thumb, just like he did the first night they met.
